Not surprised that I jumped onto the Steven Universes bandwagon; it's such an incredible show! Making my own Gemsona was bound to happen.
Nothing is really set in stone yet since the series is still on-going. These are just some ideas I've had but I'm sure some are subject to change as the series continues.

Carnelians are apart of the Chalcedony group. I'd imagine the Chalcedonys are high-ranking Gems on Homeworld, like the Quartzs but to less of an extent. I also imagine them being one the most versatile groups, meaning they range from warriors to scholars. It's just my theory for now, I'm sure the show will address this later.

Carnelian's weapon is a scepter and she's obviously not a gem that was built for combat. As a matter of fact, she's more of a scholar and historian/archivist for Homeworld. Her biggest strength and downfall is her courage and ability to speak her mind (one of the purposes of the carnelian gem is to help one speak their mind) She's a bit spoiled and materialistic, but extremely loyal and loving to those she deeply cares about. She can be rather cold and aloof to others.

Her first and original form is on the far left. She was made during the Gem War, possibly while the population on Homeworld was declining. Her second form is in the middle and serves as her current form. She's currently around 5,000 years old. Her hypothetical Crystal Gem form is on the far right. I'm not sure how or if she would align with the Crystal Gems, but it's certainly fun to imagine! I could see her as someone who feels suppressed on Homeworld and would feel more comfortable with the Crystal Gems and life on earth, though she'd need time to learn and adjust.

The background was really fun to make, too.
