This semester I'm taking a character modelling and animation class. As the semester goes on, we're going to be working on our own to model, rig, and then pose a character.

The teacher strongly discouraged us from doing quadruped characters, so no Galacticats. I wanted to do something different anyway. I started thinking about doing an anthro character. After all, he said bipedal, he didn't say it couldn't have digitigrade legs.

The first thing that popped into my head was a gryphon, probably in medieval clothes, or maybe an owl. When I finally got to work on my concept sketch, I started with a gryphon. I wanted something cutesy and feminine. As I was drawing, I thought about giving her some aviation goggles. And then it hit me. I decided to go all out and dress her like an old fashioned pilot.

Ideas flooded in about turning her into the star of a children's TV show that would be wholesome and educational, and center around planes, birds, and anything to do with flying. I might even give her a sidekick/pet.

Her name was a challenge. It needed to be something that started with "G" to give some alliteration with "Gryphon". The reasoning behind that is a young child might not have heard of a gryphon or know what they are (I know I didn't learn about gryphons until I was at least 10) so she would need to have Gryphon in her name or the title of the show so everyone knows what she's supposed to be.

I checked the old Baby Names websites and narrowed it down to 3 names I liked: Gloria, Goldie, and Gusty. I put up polls across my social media to see what the public thought. Goldie and Gusty were very close, but Gusty managed to win. I'm happy with that name since it's more original than the other two, and it fits her aviation theme.
