Solomon Tully is the Warmaster of Duke Tiberius Atreides, responsible for training and leading the armies of House Atreides as well as training Tiberius and his younger brother Matthias in the arts of war and hand-to-hand combat. A survivor of a Harkonnen attack on his homeworld of Churin, he followed and attempted to kill Gregor, the eldest son of Baron Draco Harkonnen and leader of the raiding party. Though he failed to kill Gregor, he did manage to cut off two fingers on his left hand. Stowing away aboard an ore freighter, he made his way to Caladan and entered into the service of Duke Jason Atreides. Following the death of their father during the Fourth War of Assassins, Solomon became something of an uncle to his sons and sought to always give them honest counsel. In the year 10,221 A.G., he traveled with the Atreides household when they relocated to the planet of Arrakis by Imperial order to oversee Spice mining operations.

For the next year, he worked tirelessly to ensure that the household forces were ready to defend the planet against any incursion with constant drilling. Unfortunately, it would not be enough against both sabotage and the overwhelming force of a joint Harkonnen-Sardaukar army. Buried under rubble, he was rescued by survivors who told him about Tiberius's last stand. Enraged, he joined a band of smugglers and led them in a series of small hit-and-run attacks against the Harkonnen forces until he encountered Matthias, now leader of the native inhabitants known as the Fremen. Overcome with emotion, he once again swore allegiance to House Atreides and became one of the principal commanders of the anti-Corrino forces in the Great Spice War. In 10,227 A.G., he led the assault on Arrakeen and killed Gregor in the city streets. After the war, he was made a Duke and given the lordship of Caladan for his courage and years of faithful service. He later married and had three sons and three daughters.
