The Hunted Chapter 1: www.deviantart.com/sasbe/art/T…______________________________________
"The Heirling lives."
When the dark templar entered his mistress's hall just before hearing these words, it was dimly lit. The green lights on the walls, glowing in the same color as the Nerazim's armor, illuminated the room, but this light was rather gloomy. Velazor walked leisurely toward the other end of the hall, where Vorazun, the matriarch of the Nerazim was waiting for him. Next to her stood another female protoss. Velazor recognized from her armor and gold-verified helmet that she must be of the former Templar caste. He realized that they were both under a telepathic link with each other. As he came closer, they both turned to him. "Welcome Velazor." he heard the matriarch's voice call into his head. "En taru Tassadar." The templar added.
Velazor tilted his head toward the golden head.
"En taru..." he paused briefly before finishing his sentence with "...Adun." in slight disdain. He turned back to Vorazun.
"I thank you for coming, U..." the matriarch continued.
"I am only responding to your call Matriarch." Replied Velazor before his mistress could continue. "I do not wish to linger here any longer than necessary. Tell me, how can I be of use to you?" he asked, more demanding than willing. Had he been free to choose, he would not have stepped forward, but he was bound by his judgment to the matriarch's orders.
"As pragmatic as ever, Uncompleted One." At this word, Velazor listened. Others, whether Nerazim, Daelaam, or the Fist, called him Unworthy One since his failed attempt at merging, but the Matriarch chose to use a different word. Before he could think about it, Vorazun explained his task to him with a cryptic statement. And then he heard the words:
"The Heirling lives."
Velazor's pupils enlarged. His task became clear to him even without execution. Only two words that no one had to pronounce. But one of those words displeased him.
Search. Kill.
But Vorazun's statement irritated him. It repulsed him in his faith. Salazar's facility was overrun by the Zerg. And these would certainly have no interest in the disaster that this artifact would bring them.
"Lie!" Velazor shouted at the matriarch.
"Truth!" contradicted the templar at Vorazun's side just as taciturnly.
"But how?" he turned to the Daelaami, seeking an answer.
"It looks to all appearances as if the swarm was interested in your experiment after all."
Velazor detected a haughty relish in the goldhead's telepathic voice as she stated the obvious.
"To their demise." retorted Velazor to the templar, turning resolutely back to his mistress.
"Matriarch, if we can bring the Heirling under our control, then we will be able to put a stop to the traitor Kerrigan."
"Enough, Uncompleted One." Vorazun interrupted him. "You know what I ask of you."
The second unspoken word passed through the dark templar's mind again.
"You mean what you command me to do." Velazor corrected his mistress.
"Why me? I am the most unsuitable choice for this task, despite all my abilities. How will you ensure that I do not use the Erbling for what it was created for."
Vorazun looked at him reproachfully.
"Truly, you must be... you are the worst choice."
Velazor detected a sudden determining change in her facial expression.
"But immediately the best."
If Protoss had the capacity for grumpy grumbling, Velazor would have been giving Shakura's grumpiest grumble at that moment. Vorazun's explanation was sober yet memorable, as if they were her mother's words:
"You know of his abilities, his limitations, his ... hunger."
Glancing at the goldhead beside her, Vorazun continued her explanation.
"Kulun and her escort may have been able to locate him and his carrier, but so I fear, lost the trail as quickly as you have since with your blade."
Velazor looked again toward the Daelaami, hoping to see shame in her eyes. But it was in vain. From above, she gazed fixedly down at the unworthy one.
"They say you are a good hunter." She continued, as if Velazor's gaze was an invitation to speak. "It's time you proved it."
"I've proven it quite a few times." Retorted Velazor with anger. "Whether it be Zerg, Conclave, Tal'darim, or Cerebrate, my blade has robbed all of them of their lives."
"So do it again." Kulun demanded of him, surprisingly now with less contempt in her tone. Almost begging, Velazor felt. His anger vanished as he responded. "Yes."
Search.
He turned back to his mistress. "Matriarch, I accept your mission. Send me a void glider and I will wipe this being from the face of the galaxy."
He thought for a moment about how to proceed.
"Only promise me that after this, I will finally rid myself of my guilt and servitude to you counterparts, without the threat of banishment." Velazor himself could not tell if he had just provided a convincing pretext to keep Vorazun unaware of his burgeoning idea, or if he was serious. For too long he had longed for a renewed free life on Shakuras. For a life whose own obligation was his own life.
Kill.
Briskly, the matriarch answered him, "Agreed. And a ship you will get, a bigger one than you think." Pride came over Velazor, which was immediately taken from him. "But you will neither pilot it nor command it." She turned to the Daelaami. "Does that give you all you need for your hunt?" The golden head nodded. Then Vorazun ended the meeting by saying, "Then hunt."
Kulun and Velazor left the green glowing hall together in silence. They would make no stop, but immediately warp to the ship and begin their hunt. However, something made Velazor uncomfortable.
Because Kulun was right. He is a good hunter. And a good hunter always finds his prey. But what he does with it is his own business.
