Nana Macne~ First time drawing her, and I had a lot of fun with it.

I'm having a little trouble with getting backgrounds like this one on PhotoStudio (it's basically the same as PhotoShop). Like, when I sloppily color and clean it up later, and I put the gradient in, all the white parts show. Can anyone help me with this?
