“How long is this ferry ride, Syazel?” Lucifer asked from inside the trailer. He had untied Disturbia and held the end of the lead so the colt could wander around and stretch his legs safely.  “Three more hours.. Want me to get the water bucket?” the answer came from outside the trailer. “Yes, please.” Lucifer replied. Syazel went to the front part of the trailer and pulled out the half full water bucket they had brought for the trip. He carried it to the back and carefully set it inside right by the back door.  Disturbia wandered over and slurped noisily and appreciatively from the bucket. Lucifer walked over, letting the other munch from a hay bag and get a water break, once he was done they wandered back over to the front of the trailer. Lucifer gave the other some pets. The colt nickered and leaned into the touches.

They had made it back to Shadow Hunter Stud quite late in the evening, late enough that the horses had gotten their dinner and Razalie and Albin had returned to the house for the night.  Lucifer parked the truck and trailer and turned off the truck. Syazel hopped out and unloaded Disturbia. He lead the colt to their stallion’s wing. The barn resounded in interested nickers as every horse poked their heads out to inspect the new arrival.  Dante seemed interested to see the new horse, however he was more excited to see Lucifer. Lucifer smiled and stopped by the stallion’s stall, giving him a hug and plentiful pets. Syazel continued on, walking past Asmodai and Viefinder who nuzzled the colt as he walked past.  While Eagle couldn’t see, he could smell the new arrival and enthusiastically whinnied in the direction of the pair. Rhapsody looked to the new colt with excitement, he had a new pasture pal. Hermes and Nocturne seemed less enthused about Disturbia, offering small welcome nickers as the colt walked past.  Syazel lead the colt into the stall, took off his sheet, boots, and halter before closing the stall door. Disturbia looked around the stall, walking the perimeter to sniff and inspect his new home. Syazel left him to his devices and walked past Lucifer out of the barn, “You should come to bed soon, we have had a long day” he said in passing.  Lucifer nodded and said his goodbyes to Dante before following the other back.

The next morning, Lucifer and Razalie got up bright and early to start the morning feed runs.  Lucifer took the stallion wing and Razalie took the mare wing. The male walked into the feed room and added Disturbia to their comprehensive whiteboard before getting the numbered 5 gallon buckets lined up in a row.  “Two scoops of adult feed for horses 2-7.. One scoop of adult feed, one scoop of omolene, and one scoop of supplement for horse 1.. And half a scoop of growing feed for horse 8.. Then three flakes for horse 1, two for 2-8..” Lucifer said to himself as he got all the horses feed in order. He carried all the buckets and feed over and fed all the horses in the barn.  Over the course of the day, Lucifer, Razalie, Syazel, and Albin alternated between exercises, turnouts in the pasture and round pens, and working to familiarize Disturbia with the normal goings on at SHS.

Over the next month, Lucifer had started training with Disturbia. He was grateful the other was willing to learn and already had good ground manners. They started with introducing the colt to the lunging pen and having the line clipped to his halter. The colt stood patiently as Lucifer walked him on a lunge line at first. They made laps of the pen in both directions before Lucifer slowly moved to the middle of the arena and the distance between him and the colt grew. Over time, Lucifer got the colt familiarized with basic transitions and started to have him figure out leads. After a week and a half of lunging practice, they worked on getting the colt used to a weight on his back. Lucifer put on a cushioned saddle pad and then slowly tightened a surcingle around the colt’s girth. Disturbia had none of this and refused to stand still in this process. Lucifer stepped back and let the other move around in the crossties until the colt realized the weight and girth pressure wasn’t going anywhere.

After graduating the saddle pad and surcingle, Disturbia was now getting saddle trained. The colt would do half an hour lunge sessions in the round pen, with the time gradually moving up to hour workouts over the course of the two weeks. As the end of the first training month concluded, they were working for the colt to accept a rider’s weight on his back. Syazel walked out with Lucifer and Disturbia out to the round pen. He held the colt still while Lucifer half laid on the other’s back. The colt freaked out at the weight and flew to the side, somewhat throwing off Lucifer in the process.  Syazel calmed and reassured the colt before motioning for Lucifer to start again. They worked for half an hour before Disturbia finally accepted Lucifer’s weight laying over his back. Much praise was to be had and they took the colt back to the barn. He was untacked and given praise as he was lead out to pasture to graze with Rhapsody and Viewfinder for the rest of the afternoon.

In the first week of the second month, Disturbia was ready to do his first rides with a person on his back. Lucifer mounted and walked him to the indoor arena. Albin closed the gate and stood as a supervisor as Lucifer walked the colt around the ring. Disturbia didn’t seem to mind too much and was polite and receptive to his rider’s aids.  They practiced transitions and some simple bending over the forty minute ride. Lucifer gave the other tons of pets and said quiet praises in polish to the other. He was so proud of this colt and how well he was responding to training. Lucifer then lead the colt out to the dirt turn out to let loose some pent up energy and destress from the say’s training session. He entered the paddock, took off the other’s halter and closed the gate behind him, tying the halter and lead to the fence gate.  He paused, watching the colt gallop off. {He would have made a good racer.. However it was not in the cards for this colt to become a racer. He pushed aside the thought and watched his beautiful form gallop off towards the other end of the paddock.
