Description
I'm tempted to scrap this since it began as a testing page for marker colors, then I filled it with various monsters and very quick notes for a color guide. Sorry my handwriting is rather messy.

Minor SPOILERS for the fanfics particularly "How The Other Half Lives" since this is a rough design sheet for Ickis' family, with bonus pics of Oblina and Krumm shoved in. There's also Gublina who appears in only 1 story thus far: "Bonsty On Board", since technically she won't be born until 2040 after the monsters have graduated and begun their adult lives. I can't mimic the Klasky-Csupo art style so I give the characters my own spin, such as giving all the furry monsters bangs. There are even more SPOILERS in the character descriptions.

TL,DR version = look at the colorful pictures. A cleaner, text-free version group picture in the works, with more of the TV characters included (Snorch, Zimbo, Gromble, Dizzle, etc.) I think the Gromble is the toughest main chara to draw as he's basically a blue-green lobster combined with a horse wearing high heels. Plus he's a drama queen so if he looks less than fabulous it means I haven't done him justice.

Ickis- he's the hero of most stories. Somewhat scrawny for a loomer, and he's near-sighted although he hates wearing glasses and would rather wear contacts. It's actually not as detrimental to scaring as you might think since monsters rely on scents and sounds to navigate during a loom. Once blood drips into your eyes, vision is pretty much a non-issue. He's also combustible and faces some prejudice due to the condition although it's rather more difficult to pass on blood disorders. It's heavily hinted that he acquired the combustible condition due to spending alot of time in the human world where he picked up the unique virus (like HIV, combustiblity hijacks the immune system so your body doesn't recognize it as being invasive. Mostly, it lowers your resistance to OTHER illnesses.) Ickis inherits a genetic flaw from his paternal grandmother, so he has a camoflauge gene that only kicks in when he's ill and even then it doesn't work as expected. Ickis is short, sweet, and hyperactive-- especially as a bonsty. His fur is more of a burgundy shade, closer to the Season 4 design and the DVD boxart. Oblina seems to be the only one who ever uses the nickname Icky, when she's in a good mood. Otherwise she calls him a lazy bunny.

Slickis- Ickis' father. He's one of the most famous character in the monster universe. Slickis looks like the quintessential loomer (large ears, stores excess fat in the stomach since looming burns alot of calories, they have very fast metabolisms. Slime pies for everybody!) He's known for being a top scarer, great athlete, and a loving Dad-- when he's not TOO busy, of course ("Vision Quest", "Unless He's A Matchless Match", etc.) Slickis is easily recognizable by his notched ears. The first notch was acquired during his Academy Days ("Red Badge Of Courage") and the later notches are a bit more tragic ("Growing Up Slickis".) His fur is a bright tomato red, closer to the Season 1 design (although he also has camoflauge capabilities and could alter the color at will. This is why he's so good at that "pesky element of surprise" as the Gromble puts it.) His best friends call him Slick, which is a very apt moniker.

Malvara- [deceased]. Slickis' mother. She has pointy claws and double toes like her son. She also has a swishy tail that certain monsters admire. Due to an accident in her youth, she has burn marks on her face and quills. Don't mess with Malvara. Her husband ran the Monster Army, but SHE ran the household. She's one tough shrieker monster. Initially sarcastic and bitter due to the hard life she led, she mellows somewhat after meeting Brickis. She thought the world of her bonsty, except on the rare moments when Slickis acts oblivious, then he's his father's boy. Malvara had a rather unusual passion for a monster, and her first job was less than satisfactory. Her name is based on the French words "mal" for bad, and "voir" to see/look, due to her negative outlook at first. French is actually her first language, and she's the one who prompts Slickis to become a linguist (it's canon to the TV series that Ickis' Dad speaks 28 languages fluently.)

General Brickis- [deceased]. Slickis' father. Brickis means well, but he's a bit overbearing and doesn't pick up on criticism. He is a brilliant military technician but most of his skills don't translate well outside of a war environment. He has No Indoor Voice, nor does he stop to think about whether it's always appropriate to make his opinions known. He meets Malvara when he is only a Lieutenant and is immediately smitten. She is less than impressed. Their courtship is shown via flashback ("Dance Hall Days".) He becomes more of a tragic figure towards the end of his life when he suffers PTSD from pulling too many tours of duty. Brickis has large ears like his son and even more of a squat build, as well as two-toned feet and thick claws. He wears his military uniform most of the time (helmet for combat situations, cap for dressier occasions, and he feels much less brave without those affectations, probly due to his own bonstyhood trauma.) It should be fairly obvious where his name came from, given his coloration, physical attributes, and dense attitude.

Some monsters might refer to him as "Grickis" just as a contraction of his army rank and his name.

Her name is a portmanteau of "squeal" and "Amelia". She acquires the unfortunate nickname of "Shnookie" since her father-in-law can't remember her actual name.

Yaggoroth- [deceased]. Ickis' uncle. He wants to be heroic, but he's not very good at it. Yaggoroth is notoriously bad at finding a girlfriend, although he's very sincere and earnest in his pursuits regarding popular girl Chizzle ("No Experience Necessary".) He's usually dismissed as a fluff-head because he never, ever bothers to think things through. He is protective of Squelia since he's the older sibling, by 3 minutes, and thus must be the responsible twin! She's usually the one who has to help him stay out of trouble. Although he fails in most of his schemes, he's got alot of optimism and eventually gets a little respect when Ickis hears stories about those midaventures and decides his Uncle Yaggy was worthy of some admiration. Yaggoroth's name is a corruption of the mythical planet "Yuggoth" and "yak" since he bears a slight resemblance to that animal and is talkative as well. His names also slightly resembles the word "vigorous" which definitely fits. Only monsters he trusts, such as family members, can call him Yaggy.

Kelia- [deceased]. Squelia and Yaggoroth's mother. She's a shadow manipulator and can cause shadows to move independently. She's also able to cover her entire body in shadow to sneak up and frighten humans. But she tends to use her abilities for more mundate activities, such as making shadow puppets. Like her son, she's a bit flight and impractical but fun-loving. Kelia was sometimes reluctant to wake up early in the morning since she had rather vivid dreams and wanted to see how they ended, but she never neglected her duties as a wife and mother. Her children inherit her eye color, muzzle shape, and drop ears. Her name combines "cloak" and "Celia" but is given a K spelling to preserve the hard C sound.

Daggoroth- [deceased]. Squelia and Yaggoroth's father. He's actually brilliant but is cripplingly shy and indecisive. So instead of becoming a renowned academic figure, he sells copies of the Encyclopedia Monstronica door-to-door. He's loyal and loving to his family and while his 'no pressure' sales pitch is lousy, monsters appreciate how he treats everyone with respect. Daggoroth is near-sighted like Squelia, and has a close relationship to both his children. While Squelia quietly admires Dad's abilities, Yaggoroth is more likely to rush to his father's defense whenever he hears someone insult Daggoroth for having an unimportant job. Daggoroth has some muscle so he probly could hold his own in a fight, he just would walk away from a challenge. His name is also a Lovecraft reference, combined with "dagger" since he's got grey fur and his horns curve the way certain blades do. There's also the slight suggestion of "dangerous" in his name, but this poor guy is someone who could sense danger, yet never convince anyone to heed his warnings.

Gublina- [future]. Daughter of Ickis and Oblina. It's not hard to imagine why Ickis refers to her as a "little gremlin" since she's built a little like Gizmo, the infamous Mogwai. Her fur is a mixture of black, white and magenta. Her feet is small like Oblina's but due to her coloring they resemble ruby slippers. She also has green eyes and large lips like her Mommy. There's a little bit of Ickis in her too, as evident by her floppy ears and pointy claws. Gublina skips the genetic flaw and has full camoflauge abilities like Slickis. She loves her entire family, but is definitely a Daddy's girl. Her name is s'posed to be a tribute to both Oblina and Granma Sublima since Ickis will forever be desperate to stay on his mother-in-law's good side. It's possible the Gromble believes he helped inspire the name as well, but that's just wishful thinking. She is typically known by the diminutive "Gu" which is pronounced with an "oo" sound. It's a deliberate pun to match Ickis' nickname.

Oblina- Ickis' friend and potential squish. She's aware of how much he likes her, but doesn't usually return those feelings, since Ickis can be very obnoxious in expression his desires. She's also far more concerned with schoolwork to worry about squishes most of the time. Oblina is studious, skillful, and never hesitates to say "I told you so". The fact that she's often right only encourages this tendency to nag. Ickis probly receives more lectures that all her other classmates combined. It doesn't really make much difference, of course. However there are a few occassions when Oblina praises Ickis or at least shows him kindness, and he tends to remember THOSE moments more clearly. Oblina is much happier at the Academy than she is at home, since her mother Sublima is so demanding ("Hold On Loosely", "Without A Hitch".) Deep down, Oblina and Sublima love each other, but they are both proud and stubborn, and have completely different values, so there's alot of conflicts between the two of them.

Krumm- Ickis and Oblina's best friend. As an adult, he's considered an honorary Uncle to their bonsty, even though he is very careless with bonsty eggs. Krumm is cheerful and laidback, but he doesn't do a good job of keeping secrets. He and Ickis rarely clash. When they do it's usually because one of them is acting like a big shot, probly Ickis. Oblina is moderately attracted to Krumm physically because he's big and hairy (traits he shares with her first squish, Gludge. Although Oblina valued the Snorch's intelligence most of all, he also fits the mold of being a big, hairy monster.) They date awhile ("This Is Just To Say", "Ickis' Home For Unruly Felines", "Don't Mind If I Do", "Catcher In The Grime" etc take place during that period), but ultimately decide to go back to being just friends. Krumm's a great guy so he takes it in stride. It helps that he's rather popular at the Academy, especially compared to Oblina and Ickis ("Citizen Krumm".)

I'll try to put up more artwork later on, since I've finally got a scanner and I'd like to do various scenes with the Academy monsters, such as Zimbo and the Gromble. Right now I'm working on more fanfics as well as some doodles like a Size Comparion Chart, but have also been busy so I'm sorry if the projects are not completed as quickly as I was aiming for.
