Description

---

This drizzle refused to let up. It soaked the land without the satisfaction of a downpour, and Calix hated it. He was just grouchy, he knew that, but with not a soul in sight, he had nothing to vent his frustrations to except the grey sky. That damn wolf came out of nowhere, and in his panic, Calix slipped on the slick grass and twisted something. What a miserable sight he was, limping along, wet, nursing his bruised ego. He just wanted to lay down for a bit, but as far away from that wolf as possible. He’s had enough surprises today.

It seemed Calix wasn’t the only one who wanted a break from the wet weather. The stallion found himself a nice broad oak to hide under, and just as he was settling down in the grass, a blue roan mare sauntered over and laid herself down against Calix.

Oh if looks could kill.

“You reek of wolf.” the mare said. Calix huffed. The nerve.

“Well you’re more than welcome to leave. I was here first.”

“I take it you ran into that black wolf on the edge of the forest.” she continued, blatantly ignoring Calix’s suggestion. “The one with the crooked tail.”

“...Yes.”

“I knew it. I’ve run into him a few times now. I can’t figure out for the life of me if he’s too confident for his own good or just so desperate to go after horses on his own.” As the mare spoke, her voice became increasingly hoarse and strained. Every word seemed to exhaust her.

“You sound awful.” Calix blurted out. Manners were never his strong suit anyways. The mare laughed.

“Yeah, and I feel awful. I really wouldn’t have laid next to a complete stranger if I had the energy to go anywhere else, now would I?” Calix half heartedly rolled his eyes, but he understood. If he felt as bad as she sounded, he would much rather take his chances with a stranger than offer himself up as easy pickings to every predator in the vicinity.

“I’m Vera by the way.”

“Calix.”

Vera smiled at him, but it betrayed her exhaustion.

“Well Calix, it’s nice to meet you, but I don’t think I can keep my eyes open any longer. Do me a favor and keep an eye out will you? I would greatly appreciate it.” Vera murmured, her eyes already beginning to close. Calix hummed. His near permanent scowl softened considerably.

“Don’t worry, you’re safe with me.”
