Description Inspired purely by reading history books. Contrary to what the fandom sometimes think, Finland wasn't home doing the dishes while sweden was at war.

I don't know what to say about this... I went a little crazy with the colours? It's also very sloppy made. Sorry, but I'm a lazyass.
There was so many thing in this pic I couldn't daw D: And anatomy, why do you hate me?

Okay, no doubt THIS. IS THE BEST THING EVER IN THE HISTORY OF FOREVER.

And, what war were you reading about that inspired you to do this? XD I'm a history nut, but I have zero knowledge about everything that happened before the present. And even if I read my encyclopedias...nothing ever seeps in. SO TELL MEEEEEEE please?

Andsorryfortheoverlylongcomment but I'm seriously WOWING over this.

O_O

I-I think you're overdoing the praising here (Really, you make me way too full of myself ////) But I'm glad you like! Thank you!

Forgive me for being so lame, but I didn't really have a specific war in mind. Mabye the 30 years of war. Their clothes might not even be from the same time period. >_>; Ngggh better research next time is definitely required.

The dark/light sides of the picture are absolutely brilliant. Having the gray and yellow/orange contrast really depicts the darker sides of war, reminding the viewer of both death, fires, and the sunset idea is tied up there so brilliantly. Maybe the gray could have been darker on the left side, but that could have ruined the balance of the piece. Anyway, the colors are brilliant, and I thought that they looked quite deliberate, rather than sloppy. Or, rather, the watercolor effect helps to soften what otherwise would be a grim picture, indeed.

Picking up on the anatomy ~deepwoodwayfinder noticed, I think the 'weightlessness' could be solved by having Tino's back resting more firmly against Berwald's hand. Right now we see much more of his glove than we probably would. Finland's pose is a little stiff, for example the arm closest to the reader is not following the direction of gravity, but holding the eye on their bodies. The tension, however, works, as Tino could be tensing himself through the pain (someone needs his laudanum, but I wouldn't trust field hospitals, either).

Speaking of trusting hospitals, I was wondering what reference was being used for the clothing. I'm trying to locate this in a specific war, and Sweden has been using uniforms since the Thirty Years' War, but I don't know if that extended to the hakkapeliitat or not.

Yar. I think that the angle on the ground is just plain fantastic. Again, it pulls the viewer's eye into the two without placing them front and center, and gives the loading to the 'dark' side of the picture. I also love how the tilt of the flag intercepts the eye in case the viewer went too far, and skipped over the soft-hearted soldier, and his strong cavalryman.

Finally, on a more character driven note: The expressions are just fantastic. Sweden is made of a caring that would somehow fail to come off as well as it does if not for the fact that Finland is out of it, and therefore can't see him. Anyway, this is wonderful, and I'm glad to have seen it.

Ooh, thank you for all the support, both the useful critique and the praise! I'm very glad you like! This made my day :')

I'm going to be honest with you, the referencing could have been done better by me. Finland is dressed as a hakkapeliitta, a special type of finnish soldier, and Sweden is a karolin, a soldier from the swedish karolian army (can you say that) from the early 1700. I don't know if they coexisted though, so I was lazy with the historical references. I'm sorry

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MorriganFearn In reply to Sayuri1314 [2011-02-18 02:18:55 +0000 UTC]

As far as I know the hakkapeliitta were only around during the Thirty Years War, as an exclusively Finnish light cavalry unit. They were created by Gustavus Adolphus (like everything else from the Thirty Years' War), and haven't been mentioned in anything I've read since then. I think this might have been because of some of the army reforms that were passed during the Empire, but I'm not an expert on this.

1700s uniform means Great Northern War, and given what the Finns experienced during the Wrath, I think this is actually safer to pretend that this is during the Thirty Years' War.

Sorry. I'm a dork about the bloody parts of European history. This really is a gorgeous picture, the references don't matter because the point of the picture is to inform about Finland's toughness, and war stuff, not the pure, down to the exact date history.
