Penduth is a secretive and taciturn 16-year-old boy with a crush on Skathra whom he has so far only observed from a distance. He is an average student with no particular sporting or academic talents. Despite the apparent shyness, he is unscrupulous in pursuing his own goals when he considers them important at the expense of the consequences and getting Skathra's attention could be one of those goals. A recent case of an "itchy chicken pox" outbreak in a group of boys who disturbed the Plant coven classroom could be an indication of this trend. The case might have been considered a harmless joke had the overdosing of venerou root not caused such itching that some of the victims scratched themselves until they bled. It is not clear whether this incorrect dosage was an accident or a voluntary act but in any case no one knows who is guilty and Penduth is not on the list of possible suspects as far as the faculty knows.

Always behind him but in the background is the omnipresent transparent-winged Wontaf. The palisman is shaped like a bird vaguely resembling an eagle with its talons firmly anchored on the top of Penduth's staff though it usually prefers to soar and vanish. More or less the effect is the same because the plumage of Wontaf refracts the light creating a refraction that if it remains still is not noticeable but if it spreads its wings and takes off it is difficult to follow with the eyes that perceive only a rapid blur that passes unnoticed. A passable cloaking effect that's perfect if you need to drop something on someone from a height without being seen.
