B-24s never received the fame that B-17 Flying Fortresses did (partly because they are kind of ugly looking!). The B-24 had a greater range than the 17 (why we used it more in the Pacific until the B-29 showed up) and carried a greater payload than the 17. However, it was harder to fly and could not absorb damage like the B-17 could. Pilots who flew both much preferred the 17!
