Description
Zenith is a ooak (one of a kind) kirin sculpture, made from polymer clay over wire and foil and painted in acrylics. Her hair is a mix of tibetan lamb fur and suri alpaca wool. She is about 4.5 inches from chest to bum, and about 12 inches tall to the top of her tree horn.Zenith was a ton of fun to make, and has a lot more sculpting detail than my other kirins, including leaves and vines in her scales, and sculpted fur covering her whole body. The tree horn is made from plastic, glue, and fake moss so has a fair bit of flexibility to it to avoid damage. Her tail is made similarly so is more durable than it looks!
Zenith is for sale on etsy here: www.etsy.com/listing/157779163…

Maybe the retakes could be higher resolution?
It'd be lovely to see the detail on this glorious creation!

There are a couple more on my facebook page and the etsy listing, but overall the photos weren't good so I should get more. I'll try to put up a "details" collage pic when I do!

wow...love the cute, almost playful pose...and that tree-horn...unusual and different, which is cool. Just curious...how did you balance it so it's not top/front-heavy and falling over?

Thank you! The horn bends backwards and twists so the weight is evenly distributed. The horn is mostly glue and plastic so is also a lot lighter than the body, which helps! I'm looking into getting ball bearings to put into armatures to get some fancier balanced poses going for future sculpts, too

ah, ok, that makes sense. My attempts at sculpture (I'm not very good at it, XD) always end up top/front-heavy, and the neck is usually way too long XD (I was using clay/ceramics, but balance is probably similar no matter the media). I tried to make a cerberus...it ended up falling forward and fusing (the glaze) to somebody's wheel-thrown cup in the kiln. I felt bad for taking thier cup, but I worked hard on my sculpture, I wasn't about to give it up. XD; Derpy balance or not.

do you use any sort of armature with that type of clay? I took a pottery class when I was like 11 years old and they only let us use newspaper for bulking. With mine I also bake them on their side on a bed of cotton so they don't shift around or tip in the oven, not sure how feasible that is with a kiln though!

Nope, didn't use an armature...which may be the problem XD I'm not sure if they would have let me, as I don't really know what (besides the ceramics) can and can't be put in a kiln. This was in college, where the instructors did all the kiln firing and stuff. I really don't know much about it.

You should try polymer clay sometime! You can bake it in a kitchen oven and it's a lot less messy than stoneware clay I always came out of those classes with clay in my hair, on my face, haha

I've made beads with femo before...but nothing really major...and I kinda...don't like using the oven. (toaster oven...yes, regular oven...no) I have this irrational fear of burning the house down with it. XD;
