December 2013

This was a comic that I made for a class final back in December of 2013. I had this nostalgia for Banjo Kazooie at the time and chose the theme to be a comparison between the two final levels of Kazooie and Tooie. Click Clock Wood and Cloud Cuckooland have this similarity between them that hauntingly relates to the vibe of both games: Kazooie's levels and overall theme had a more innocent fairy tale ambiance by comparison, whereas Tooie's felt colder, with Gruntilda coming back as a skeleton, the death of Bottles, the destruction of Spiral Mountain, and Gruntilda’s plan to suck the life away from the civilians of Isle-O-Hags. “Cloud cuckoo land is a state of absurdly, over-optimistic fantasy or an unrealistically idealistic state where everything is perfect. Someone who is said to "live in cloud cuckoo land" is a person who thinks that things that are completely impossible might happen, rather than understanding how things really are.” In light of this, the world of Cloud Cuckooland in Banjo Tooie is like a melancholy callback to Click Clock Wood after everything that came before in Tooie was grasped by the observer, reminding the observer of how different things are from what they once were. I illustrated this comic around George Harrison’s song "All Things Must Pass."
