All because Starfleet decided to put the starbase on an uninhabited peninsula 25 years ago, the inhabitants of Sumner decided that they wanted to move their capital to where the seat of Starfleet’s local power was. And that left Elegance, the old capital, in a steady state of decline. Oh, it wasn’t going to turn into a dystopian hellscape overnight, but it was certainly heading that way. Port Platinum and Diamond Isle were still full of nouveau riche snobs, but they were also located on Stelmer Bay, which was still a major sea and space cargo hub. But as one left the waterfront and moved further inland, towers full of capsule apartments became the norm. And even these joined the ruins of the suburbs—abandoned buildings, trash-filled roads and alleys, and those so far down on their luck they couldn’t even afford a capsule apartment and squatted in what was left.

As Maehra left the suburbs and on to the open road, she opened the throttle on her VDM coupe. Sure, Volvo-DeLorean marketed it locally as a ‘cyber car’ and even manufactured it locally and priced it near the higher middle of the market but was really one of the lower end cars from their line in the core worlds. The microfusion reactor responded, driving the sports coupe towards 200 kph, fastest she felt safest, given the roads into Elegance were starting to degrade.
