Description Idea I'd been having for a while, but couldn't get around to drawing until now.
I was fairly pleased with how Fantane turned out (and she looks way more human with her long ears hidden and without her mask). Her neck didn't seem so long on the original drawing, though, and now it bothers me since I would have to redraw the whole thing to fix it. I'm not completely happy with Darkrai's face or posture, but I decided to keep it. I'm ambivalent about the use of gijinka Pokemon. While Darkrai gijinka was most convenient to the picture and plot of the scene (since Fantane has a mostly human appearance), I don't know if I would use gijinka if I ever wrote a story.
This probably took me longer than the majority of what I post. After I finished the two protagonists I decided to add in a background, so Baron Alberto was inserted, as well as the archway over him and the door behind him.

Warning: Inserted scene written out. Going to be fairly long.

Fantane stood to one side, appearing to peer around idly while hiding the unease she really felt. She still wasn’t sure that she would completely pass as a human even with her ears covered by the updo and the contacts in her eyes to make her pupils appear as a human’s. The inserts were annoying as she constantly felt as if she needed to rub her eyes. It had taken Alice a while to convince Fantane to wear the stunning ruby dress that was currently adorning her. Though her natural covering could be removed and replaced with other clothing, the hybrid didn’t like doing so since it made her feel more exposed. Of course, with the dip down past her waist in the back she was actually more exposed.
Baron Alberto was currently greeting the guests “lucky” enough to make his list, which kept him off of Fantane’s back for a short while. Though he hadn’t officially asked yet, she knew he was expecting to have the first dance with her. The Baron made her nervous with his obvious attraction, first to her human disguise and now to her true form once the obviously non-human elements were concealed. Alice had told Fantane of his past attempts to capture Alice’s heart which had only ended when she finally married Tonio (though he did still try to “harmlessly flirt” with her).
The hybrid’s teal eyes made one more pass towards the door when their motion stopped and they widened. There, walking with authority that the butler had not tried to challenge, was a man both unfamiliar and yet very familiar. His white hair, except for the fringes hanging about his eyes and covering the right one, hung down elegantly and was clasped at the end. A black tuxedo jacket lay unbuttoned on top of a dark gray vest and red shirt and black pants had just the proper creases. Smooth gray-black skin was exotic among the many pale attendees of the ball and the visible teal eye was set on her.
Fantane’s mind raced as she couldn’t help but stare. What had Darkrai done? HOW had he done it? She watched him as he strode toward her casually and stopped just in front of her, his lips quirked in a small smirk.
“You look surprised,” the disguised Dark Pokémon stated, his voice a perfect match to the husky mental voice she was so used to “hearing.” When Fantane only nodded and gave him an inquiring look his smirk grew a little more. “You are not the only one who has come in contact with Arceus. Arceus knows you are here, of course, and could sense my wish to accompany you. Considering my attempt to save Alamos Town years ago, Arceus decided to play along with my whim and gave me this,” he reached into the pocket of his jacket and pulled out a small pendant that resembled a full moon, only black. It reminded Fantane of her golden sun pendant that was currently hiding in the mass of hair held by the ruby-studded netting. Her pendant augmented her ability to use her Psychic powers to create an illusion around herself to appear as her original human form, Farra. Though Darkrai was not Psychic, it appeared his pendant either worked in a similar manner or perhaps even completely changed his form. He slipped the pendant back into his pocket, then stood straight as the dance music began.
“May I have this dance?” Without waiting for her verbal affirmation, for her expression said it all, he clasped her right hand into his left and placed his other hand on her waist while her left hand found his shoulder. As he gracefully led her to stand closer to him, his peripheral vision caught sight of the Baron behind them. The man’s face showed his shock and one hand was held out as if in denial that the woman he’d intended to be HIS dancing partner was now partnered with another. This made Darkrai’s expression turn smug as he led his partner in the three-quarter step of the waltz currently playing. If he had his way, they would dance the whole night without interruptions from the pesky Baron.

Pokemon (including the Baron and, sadly, Darkrai) is copyright Nintendo (I think)
Fantane is my own creation
