It's funny what a story this paints, though it seems it wasn't the original intention. I can see the brown one being a sort of tag-along to the grey one - excitable, friendly, naiive little thing, while the other is the more level-headed of the two, looking after the brown with equivalent annoyance and affection.
Only a great piece does this so simply.

That's fecking adorable. I love the detail you've put into the picture, such as the little flowers and the texture of the fur. The impressionist style of the tree behind them is a nice touch as well.
