Description
This is, as the title may already have given a clue of, the first page of a new comic I am doing, featuring Julius the Cat and taking place in Cartoonland.REFERENCES:
- For those who may not know him, Julius the Cat is the Walt Disney Company's oldest recurring character of all. He was first a supporting character in the Laugh-o-Gram cartoon series from 1924 to 1927, and later the deuteragonist and sometimes protagonists of the Alice's Comedies cartoons. As his name implies, Julius is a quick-minded cartoon anthropomorphic black cat, sharing some features with Felix the Cat. He is now, as far as I know, in the public domain — but if he isn't, then I guess he still belongs to the Walt Disney Company.
- As for the pigeon postman is, rather obviously, inspired by popular cartoon depictions of carrier pigeons. If you really want to link him to a definite character, it's mainly Yankee Doodle Piegon from the "Wacky Races" spin-off Stop that pigeon !.
- The cat is just some random cartoon cat, but his reaction to seeing the pigeon's hammer is taken from "Tom and Jerry" and Tex Avery.
- The opening panel and narration is a reference to Richard Williams's The Thief and the Cobbler. More obvious "Thief" allusions, or even characters, are likely to pop up later in the story, unless I change my script.
