Description My first shoot since I got back from south island, I was expecting a good sunset but then those low thick clouds formed on the horizon which usually means the sunset is ruined but eventually the sun shone through giving this streak of really strong orange light.

Hamilton's Gap, Awhitu, Auckland, NZ.

Processing:

I don't have a decent ND Grad filter so all my shots are exposure blends. Basically, for those who don't know, I take two or more exposures (one for the sky, one for the the mid ground, one for the foreground and in this case one for the rocks) using a tripod and manually blended them in Photoshop CS3. This method takes some time to get right and retain quality but if you can't afford an ND Grad and are competent in Photoshop, exposure blends are well worth the time and effort.

Edit: Made it very slightly darker using curves, it makes everything stand out a bit more. Also, the horizon was very slightly un-level so I corrected it after pointed it out.

That sucks but at least you have a place to get them done. I've still got nothing!

Though I have to say you're really inspiring to get off my arse and start looking. So thanks!

Yeah it will still be worth it if I get a decent print. That's unlucky, have you looked into getting prints from the Kodak website yet? Mine is getting printed on Kodak matte paper so I'll let you know how it turns out, should be done in a couple days.

That's good, it works both ways though. I know it's not a competition but when I have similar tasks to someone else I know I get them done quicker or it makes me do the tasks better than I usually would. For example, when my brother started taking photos I started going shooting more and I'm pretty sure I now try harder to get good photos even though I know it's stupid of me to be like that, I should have been trying just as hard before my bro started.

It's not stupid if it makes you better at what you do and as long as you're not being a jerk about anything, then it's all good.

I'm still trying to figure out how I'm going to go about it. I don't know how the money thing would work if I did it online. The more I think about it the more I'd rather find a place here that I could go to, then meet the buyer and they could pay me for it. But since that's not working out so far, I'm not sure what I'll do. I guess I'll just have to keep looking!

You're most welcome George, I am not a huge fan of landscapes but I like some, especially like flowing shots like this, I keep meaning to get down to the coast with a tripod and try it out.

What about Marc Adamus' landscapes, some of them flow but they all capture an extreme atmosphere and evoke some kind of feeling, like this [link]

Yeah you should definitely give it a go, I'm sure you will get some good shots in no time. What kind of lens have you got for that?

I have Marc Adamus in my watch Thanks

I could do with getting a wide angled lens, for now i would have to use my 17-85mm.

If you use a 40D 17mm would be plenty wide enough but if you are thinking of really getting into coastal work then a 10-20 or 10-22 would be best. I look forward to seeing some shots mate!

Fantastic! The lines formed by the water in the long exposure work so well as lead-ins to the sunrise!

sculpted1 In reply to scooter-tim [2009-02-07 07:59:05 +0000 UTC]

Thanks mate! Yeah that's what I was going for and the same for the line of rocks, it took a while before I got a wave going in the right direction though. Sunset not sunrise, easy mistake.
