Kalii was an irrigator and hydrologist, tasks highly esteemed on the desert world of Nlia.
She was born to the scout Faroma Cavee and scout/waterfinder, Nyshon Ryleth

She had a younger sister, Brimyl Ryleth

From the start Kalii was calm, confident, very mature for her age and a bit of an old soul. She had a strong will and could be very passionate, but she also possessed a cool, steady demeanor and a seemingly endless supply of patience. Highly proficient and with a strong work ethic, she never half attempted anything and loved a challenge. She had a very sharp eye for the things going on around her and was very good at seeing beneath the surface, in both circumstances and people. Although a quiet person she enjoyed interacting with other people and had a beautiful singing voice.

Although her father was from a nomadic tribe and her mother a scout, Kalii, preferred the city life. However she also oved the outdoors and had a deep interest in the inner workings of nature. From her father she inherited a love of water and upon adulthood began a career in hydrology. For thousands of years water had been more valuable than gold in the Southern Lands of Nlia and tasks involving the finding and management of it were among the most highly esteemed.

Kalii became a noted hydrologist and was highly sought out for her skills at irrigation. Making the land bloom and bringing refreshment to others were her greatest joys. She brought refreshment in other ways as well; with her cool, steady temperament she was a skilled mediator.

Her work took her to many areas on Nlia and in 2229 she became involved in an extended project in Khasha, the famous City of Steel. During the project she worked closely with the Zoresha, Khasha's oldest and most esteemed metal-working guild. While there she met Farseen L'Naym a junior member.

Farseen was a brilliant craftsman and filled with inner fire. She immediately found herself drawn to his inner flame and he to her refreshing spirit. They quickly started working on projects together and that comprised their early courtship. They would later laughingly say that it was an odd courtship indeed; instead of exchanging gifts and trinkets, they exchanged heat and water. She basking in the heat of his inner flame and he in her cool, inner waters.

They were opposites in many ways; Farseen was a man of fire and steel, while Kalii was a woman of water and nature. He was happiest at the forge while she was happiest outside. He was intense and passionate, while she was calm and serene. But they complemented each other well; Farseen often said that she was a strong steel that could withstand the hottest fire and a cool stream that could douse a flame before it became too hot.

They lifemated in 2232 and the next two years were joyful. Their love for each other was deep and whole-hearted and they delighted in each other. He was her Life Flame who brought light and warmth to her life and she was his beloved Water Queen who brought refreshment to his soul. They also poured their passion into their work: Farseen rose through the ranks of the Zoresha, ultimately becoming a junior head. Kalii, although she still traveled, settled in Khasha working to bring the gift of water to her new home.

In late 2234 the Mating struck and both were overjoyed. It struck during twilight, Kalii's favorite time of day and a time that was viewed as special, almost magical by most Nlians. The months that followed were the happiest of their lives together as they eagerly anticipated becoming parents.

But then tragedy struck. During the seventh month of her pregnancy Kalii contracted Lungarus Syndrome, an extremely rare but highly dangerous disease that effectively shuts down the victim's respiratory and cardiovascular systems. The disease weakened her terribly. Three months in the hospital and all of the healers’ efforts to treat her failed. Her greatest fear, however was for her child. Her womb's natural defenses would protect the baby from the disease, but due to the strong vascular link between a Nlian mother and her unborn, if Kalii died before her child was born, it would die too. Due to the link it couldn't be removed and placed in an artificial womb either.

For three months Kalii heroically fought to stay alive. Even after it became obvious that she had no hope of surviving, she fought to live long enough to give birth. Finally in 2235, during another twilight, she gave birth to a healthy baby girl. She named her Shylea , 'Twilight's Gift.'

Two days after her child’s birth, Kalii insisted on leaving the hospital, wanting to spend her last days at home. A week after the birth of her daughter, Kalii departed from this life surrounded by her family. But she left behind a daughter who would have an incredible destiny and would go on to befriend one of Starfleet's most famous captains, James T. Kirk .
