Description
i was just sitting silentlyon a park bench in old louisville's
miniature central park
writing a love poem about a boy i knew
as my friend's dog dug a hole
sipping my caffeinated night cap
around two in the morning
when i happened to glance up
only briefly
to see a robust homeless woman
with a sandy tangled pony tail
casually stroll up to a tree
unbuckle her st. vincent de paul
donation khaki shorts
lift her sweat-yellow stained tank top
and squat down to take a leak
and i thought
"wouldn't it be nice
to have no premonitions
about peeing on a tree in a public park
carrying all my possessions on my back
and having no one to answer to"
a stray rain drop fell from a leaf above
and after landing on my head
for just a second i looked up
and when i looked back down she was gone.
i couldn't remember anymore my reasons
for being at a dangerous park so late
so i gathered my things and walked
home in the dark.
