Description No, you're not about to see a midair collision; there's actually several feet of clearance between them.  This is the Red Arrows' way of seeing how many pants they can wet in the crowd, though.

This picture, which Dad rightfully considered one of his best, was taken at an airshow at Sembach Air Base in West Germany, 1980.  The Red Arrows are the British Royal Air Force's air demonstration team, and this was their first year in the British Aerospace Hawk.  We saw them in the old Folland Gnat two years before this.  

I've been lucky enough to see most of the world's air demo teams, and the Red Arrows are some of the best.  Of course, with pilots good enough to belong to the Blue Angels, the Thunderbirds, the Frecce Tricolori, and the Patrouille de France, saying one is better than another is like saying one piece of bacon is better than another...they're all excellent!
