This is a great piece. I could see this hanging in a good gallery.

The depth of field is great, but for the composition, I think being able to focus in more on the large rock outcropping, and the sharpness of it would be better. The texture the area around the "doorway" contrasts sharply with the time-lapsed smoothness of the water and the clouds, and that's important.

I think you could have gotten away with bumping down your f-stop to around 16, raised your ISO to around 150-200, and left the shutter for around 6 seconds. I think this would have given more substance to the water and the waves moving around, allowing for more depth in them. They look great and misty as they are, but I wonder if you might have been able to get them to be more substantial. Of course, that would also depend on the height and strength of the waves and the whether the tide was coming in or out.

The right side of the picture distracts me somewhat, from a Values point of view. The shadow in the upper right leaves the balance of the photo a little lopsided, and really challenges the viewer to accept the "doorway" as the topic, rather than the bright space on the left. To add to the oddness of the darkspot, it looks as thought there is the slightest bit of a ghost just above the "middle" rock on the bottom right of the photo.

To help alleviate the challenge of the Values and the Balance, you could definitely have gotten away with cropping off the two edges of the rock wall. Even a 16x9 horizontal that is centered around the wall, with the doorway in it would be perfect! This would also help correct the focus back to the doorway itself, and wouldn't break the Rule of Thirds, because the doorway isn't exactly centered, and the wall is "leaning" (of varying height).

Still, overall, really great job here. I've always loved these kinds of photos, and I love the vision you've got. It's something you see around, but it still feels fresh and clean.

One thing I was thinking for another title could be the Gate into the future... and then from the other side, the Gate from the past.
