Description
Hoo boy, this one had a lot going on in it.Stephen Gammell fan art, from the Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark book series.
Once again, just charcoal pencils and a smudge stick, with some strategic use of a paper tower and a Gronkle eraser. XD
Here's a link to Gammell's original drawing; 24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m6k…

Ahhh yes, i remember those books~
The art used to be more scary to me then the tales honestly but together they made them all the more horrifying, especially when you have a huge imagination, hehe~

Oh, agreed. By themselves, the stories are more like "dad trying to scare the kids while telling campfire stories".
Then you get Gammell swaggering in, throwing a blood-soaked sack of dismembered body parts on the fire, before disappearing back into the dark woods, whistling ominously as he goes. XD

Haha, exactly~
I love how grudgy and twisted his style was, there was one story in particular with a haunting picture for me, i cant quiet remember it since my memory is hazy but i know it was of a person and it was very basic compared to his other ones but i believe thats what made it all the more unsettling haha.

Oh gog that one is as well xD
The only stories i remember most sadly are the bride locked in the chest one, the dog girl and the one where a girls cheek busted open and a bunch of spiders came out.

Ah! I drew that one too! The one with the spiders. It's on the first page of my "Monsters and the Macabre" folder. X3

I was attempting to recreate the style of the original as closely as possible. This is Stephen Gammell's version; The Dead Hand

I did my best to recreate all the detail in the original here; The Dead Hand
I need to buy one of those kneaded erasers so I can control the white bits better. Maybe a sponge too? I'm not sure what people use to blend big gray bits more smoothly. XD

When I did a lot of traditional stuff, the things I used to blend were called "tortillons", which are also called blending sticks sometimes. You can find them at a craft store for pretty cheap. They also vary in sizes, so you can blend really small areas or rather large ones.

Ah, I already have a bunch of those, actually. They're what I've been using on all of my Gammell pieces so far. I've been calling them "blending stubs" because I didn't know they had an official name, lol. XD
I was thinking more along the lines of a sponge or something to make large areas like the background go a lot faster and/or look a lot smoother. Not sure if something like that exists for charcoal, though.

I've heard you can use charcoal powder and apply it with a brush. I'm not sure how well a sponge would work, unless you get a really fine, soft one (like re-purposing a beauty blender, since they're so fine). Sponges tend to be coarser then one would imagine... Also definitely kneaded erasers help, since you can make them into ANY shape, which some find eliminates the need for other tools.

Ah, yes! I've been seeing some of the powder technique you mentioned whenever I look up chalk pastel tutorials. I'll have to try that out sometime. X3
