Description
This is the Great and Lovable Peridot and her Metallic partner, Copper.Created in the New Diamond Empire's labs, Metallics are an artificial gem sub-species whose main ability is maintaining a shapeshifted form almost indefinitely, similar to a bismuth in terms of mailability. To capitalize on this, they are assigned as a highly advanced form of "smart armor" with the added bonus of a pearl-type assistant and a quartz-like bodyguard; all the pros of fusion with none of the supposed cons. Metallics default to male, just as gems default to female, and are generally very animal-like in appearance, specifically reptilian.
Peridot is one of a few gems actually created by Blue and Yellow Diamonds on their own, since Pink Diamond betrayed them and White Diamond is MIA. While rejuvenated decenters are claimed as “new gems”, any gem actually created by the two are always defective in some way: smaller, weaker, disfigured, missing key gem abilities, etc. They are all some shade of green, all work in the Empire’s Labs in some capacity, all assigned a Metallic, and all very aware of how their origins differ from the other “new gems”; after all, they are the ones who rejuvenate decenters and experiment on those who manage to resist rejuvenation.
“You’re special, you must be protected, you can do more good here than anywhere else, those other gems don’t really know what’s going on and they’d reject you if they ever found out you helped with it! Shattered gems turned into armor, Metallics made of a gem’s base elements, rejuvenators, corruption, forced fusions and cover-ups. We are the only ones you can trust.”
It's a very cult-y cult-ure.

Finding the Cluster before it emerged had become a pet project of the entire green gem group; they’d never have a shortage of “raw” materials for all of their various projects if they could just get their hands on it. Unfortunately, it was still incubating on earth, which was nearly impossible to find thanks to Pink Rose, and time was running out since it was set to emerge soon. The Cluster would be easily trackable if it did form, but then they’d have to fight it at full strength, a daunting proposal for even the old Gem Empire. Finally, they came up with an algorithm to potentially find the earth but were barred from pursuit.
“It's too dangerous for our precious new gems to go after on their own, we would need time to put together an exploration party and verify things before putting more resources into a hunch-”
The green gems listened, nodded their heads, and promised to get back to their jobs, but as soon as backs were turned, they hijacked a ship to go after the Cluster themselves; they had an unknown deadline and couldn’t wait for the slow grinding gears of bureaucracy. Turns out they were right; they found the earth but underestimated its defenses and Peridot found herself in an escape pod headed for earth as her fellow green gems limped back home. She decided to take it upon herself to complete the mission and (announcer voice) "Behind enemy lines and with limited hope of rescue, Peridot can only rely on herself and her faithful Metallic, Copper, to survive."
~Random Notes!~
I came up with the concept of Metallics a while ago but frankly it fits better in this AU anyways.
When referring to gems wearing a metallic, where this fact is important, they are generally referred to as a single being, like Metallic Peridot, rather than as two individuals, like Peridot and Copper. "Metallic" is used as their gem name and they are considered an accessory, just like other forms of smart armor, but connote a higher rank/authority. Giving a metallic a nickname only really helps with communication, and many prefer to dominate rather than communicate.
For the longest time I couldn't decide what metal to base Metallic Peridot off of until I gave them a snake-head-tail thing so they could communicate easier, which reminded me of the Copperhead Snake. Also, copper wiring alludes to Peridot's expertise.
I haven't decided if Metallics even can fuse "properly", or if Peridot would even want to try, but if it ever does happen, Copper and Peridot would either fuse into Turquoise or Dioptase; both are copper rich gemstones in a shade of blue-green.
Having one or two pieces of "smart armor" is considered normal, even high class if they match, but having "too many" is seen as propping up a weak gem that "might be better off recycled". A chilling thought to anyone with empathy or sympathy but the rumors of horror stories keep gems in line.
The Diamonds also have metallics, which helps keep their "larger than life" façade alive, since not everyone is fully aware of Metallics as a species.
I know I want Demantoid Garnet (from the games) to be part of the green group, and Jades/Nephrites are canon green gems I can use, but I haven't decided exactly who else to have and what metallics to assign them. I also can't decide if Emerald leads them or if she's off doing her own thing as a scavenger. While malachite is green, I have no idea what a non-fusion Malachite would be like.
Metallic Gems display varying degrees of animalistic traits, depending on the relationship of the Gem and their Metallic. Peridot indulges Copper while they're alone, as pictured above, but forces a more "acceptable" form (e.g. canon Limb Enhancer look) around pretty much anyone else, even if other Metallic Gems are more animalistic. On earth, she doesn't bother hiding it; survival matters more than appearances.
I haven't decided if Peridot should keep her metal powers or let Copper have that and give her something else.
