Description The Colosseum is a historical and tourist monument located in the center of Rome visited by many tourists from around the world. It is probably the most impressive ruined building of the Roman Empire. The Colosseum was the largest building of its time and today is the largest ancient amphitheater that can be visited in Italy.
The Colosseum is located east of the Roman Forum. Construction began under Emperor Vespasian in 72 AD and was completed in 80 AD. under the leadership of his successor and heir Titus. Other changes were made during the reign of Domitian (81-96). These three emperors are known as the Flavian dynasty, and the amphitheater was named in Latin Amphitheatrum Flavium for its association with the family name (Flavius). The huge amphitheater was built on the site of an artificial lake, part of the large park built by Nero in central Rome, which also included the Domus Aurea and the statue of Colossus. This gigantic statue of Nero, 36 meters high, which presented the emperor as a sun god gave the current name of the building - the Colosseum. The statue, located next to the amphitheater, was later demolished. Not only the statue but also the amphitheater offered a grandiose view. In the shape of an ellipse, with a large axis of 186 m, a small axis of 150 m, it had a perimeter of 520 m and a height of 55 m, offering seats for approximately 50,000 spectators. The foundation on which it was built was 12 meters thick. Although it was partially ruined due to damage caused by earthquakes and stone thieves, the Colosseum is still an iconic symbol of Imperial Rome and is listed as one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
