Description
Traian's Column is an ancient monument in Rome built by order of Emperor Traian, to commemorate his victory in Dacia, which has been preserved to this day. The monument is located in Traian's Forum, in the immediate vicinity - to the north - of the Roman Forum. Finished in 113, the column has the exterior provided with a famous carved bas-relief, in the shape of a spiral, which artistically reproduces in an epic form the wars between the Romans and the Dacians waged by Traian for the conquest of Dacia.
The column is about 40 meters high and contains 18 massive blocks of Carrara marble, each weighing 40 tons.
In 1536, the pedestal of the Column was released from the ruins of Traian's forum by order of Pope Paul III. The great architect Fontana took care of its restoration, starting with 1558. In 1587, instead of the statue of Traian, originally located at the top of the column, but melted in the Middle Ages, was placed by order of Pope Sixtus V. a statue of Saint Peter.
Because Dacians and Romans are the ancestors of Romanian people, I was happy to see this wonderful monument and it's a real pleasure to share it with you all.
Thank you for visit and for all your beautiful support!
