Description
Artwork for Pride Month 2023 Being Transgender is Natural, Transphobia is not.
Swoop at the invaders. Reclaim the streets.
Earlier this year there was an anti-trans rally in my country that was also attended by a group of people who displayed white supremacist signs. I also think it's symbolic of a larger pattern of rising transphobia across the would.
So for this year I wanted to something to show my solidarity with those who are transgender and non-binary. As what is happening is quite frankly awful.
They are who they say they are. They are being their authentic and true selves. No one has tricked them into being transgender. Transgender is just a different and natural state of being unlike transphobia which is learnt from society.
I chose a magpie for this drawing basically because they are a native bird who is quite at home in urban areas. You will find them in parks, backyards and yes, even in the city surrounded by tall skyscrapers, which is where the anti-trans rally took place.
The Australian magpie, is also famous for swooping and sometimes pecking at people who come too close to their territory and/or brethren.
I see this reflected in the Trans and wider LGBTQA+ community. Where we can and should support, fight for and protect each other against those invaders who say we don't deserve space to live.
Done with Copic and regular markers and fine-liner. Enjoy!
