Description
Pole axe head, complete. Ax head is 7 1/2"/192mm edge to point, ax edge is 5 5/8"/142mm. Top spike is 7 3/4"/200mm, and the long langets to spike tip are 24 3/8"/616mm. The handle is ash- and is octagonal, about 1 1/2"/37mm by 1 1/16"/27mm, overall length is 73"/1855mm. The edge of the ax and the spear point ar spring-steel, hardened to be tough, but they will take an excellent edge. The rest is mild steel. In this view, you can see some details- file work on the feather, and the front is actually a 'key' that holds the axe blade to the weapon. All nails are "crossed" inside the wood, so they cannot work loose.

where did you get the pattern from, is it historical.
is it an interpritation, or just something you made?

It is based on a piece in the book "Arms and Armor of Knights and Landsknechts" by Jan Piet Puype and Harm Stevens, page 250. I did a few things differently- mostly the haft is not rectangular, and I added some minor detailing. There is a picture in my folders here with a photocopy of the original next to the ax portion. That was from a while ago, I had contracts I needed to finish before I got to play with this one!

It's out of print already- and yesterday, there was only 1 we could find... for $75 U.S.! I'd keep a lookout for it- not the best, but there are some neat bits in it. $40 would be good, more, not so much.

Not for books of this nature- it's a museum book, so only had about 400 printed in the world. But it's one of those things you can't get anyplace else... I have several like it- my friend has book on the wreck of the Mary Rose- and book 2 goes for over 400US IF- IF you can find it...

Pretty much. I make a lot of knives and such, as well as leather items. I also do fight choreography, and sometimes teach stuff...

Well- it kinda just happened... I've been making stuff, mostly for Renaissance Faires for myself, and had folks begin t ask for things. It was only spotty, much like my quality, back then, I might add! But, as time went by, I learned by doing, took classes, read a LOT. And then did more reading... made tools, made better tools, and as things happened- now here I am. There was no real, single thing that happened to make it all come together, but rather a meandering path. I have always tried to make better and better items, and have after a bit over 25 years of playing decided I should do what I love to do- make stuff! Of course, being self-employed- the boss is really a total idiot, but you gotta do what you gotta do! If I lived in NZ, I'd probably working my bottom off at WETA right now~ Heck. I'd move there for a while if I had the chance to work for them on the Hobbit!

yes... the hobbit was kinda my life goal, but i didnt know what i needed to get in. so i went for my next love which is animation, but i still by far prefer making things with my hands. its usually what i do at SCA events. problem with New Zealand is, it can be rather hard to find tools to use, like draw knives etc...
but i still want to make it a goal to set up a workshop, since i will be taking some wood turning classes, and have been failling to obtain metal working gear due to not knowing what i really need, weightwise that is, i know of the tools, but according to the Scadian smiths weight of ballpen hammers and such is rather important.... so i guess its gonna be alllottt of reading for me aswell!

Happy to help with what info I can give- A lot of sources are via the web, so you can get them there, too. Big thing is that the weight is dependent on you- the smith. Just like turning- you have TeknaTool- a NZ company, so you can get some extremely good stuff there! Tell you what, though- send me a PM, and I'll send you some info I send to most folks interested in smithing. Note- it was originally to another fella, but I need to get some stuff done so will be copy and pasting it- but the info is good, and a couple of books will do you a LOT of good!

sgainbrachta In reply to coragus [2012-02-20 03:25:23 +0000 UTC]
Actually, there isn't much need of an anvil for armor, really. Other things, yes- but while the anvil is nice, it's not all that necessary. I'm off to dinner (well making it~), and so will check back tomorrow morning here- it's about 7:30 here~ (Pacific time). But take a look at what I sent- and I'll send you some links when I have time to find them all again, in a note. Bestens!
