Two Asian women are power walking across the dirty, pale pink tiles. There are a few splatters of dried mud on the uneven ground. A clay-coloured trashcan has black scrape marks around the bottom. The sun is on my left ear, making my head feel like it is in a toaster. It smells like grease and the remnant stink of old French fries. People walking past have double shadows, one leaning forward into the future and the other falling palely behind, fading into the past. A twitchy pigeon is pecking at imaginary crumbs beneath a rusted metal table. A coat brushes against the ground. A peanut-shaped spit mark darkens the cement, which looks five years old. A man with a limp in his left leg walks past, and the sound of his footsteps fade away into the sound of the plashing fountain.
