Description
Helena glanced around at the bare walls in her room on the wrong side of the world. They were a blank canvas waiting for her to build a new life for herself. It seemed like lately she had been through more than she could handle. Once upon a time everything was so simple, back when the most she had to worry about was P.E. but it was clear those days were far behind her now. She knew she couldn't turn back the clock, she had to move forward. This was her chance to start again and paint the white walls with whatever new memories came her way.The white-washed world was someplace new and untouched. Maybe she could find it in herself to survive Toronto. She had to give it her best shot, regardless. She had left everything behind to mend her heart and put her life back together piece by piece. She didn't know when exactly she became a jigsaw puzzle, all she knew was that she hadn't felt whole in a long time. This frozen country was as far away from her past as she could get, she had to believe that the answers she was searching for were here somewhere.
The weather in Toronto was bitter cold, she was sure her bones were frozen stiff. She spent most of the first week curled up in her room, wrapped in layers of blankets. She was hiding away from her discomfort and she couldn't find the courage to see past the white surrounding her. This was not what she had in mind when she left home. She could hear her mother now; "Helena, if you can't step outside how do you expect to live in the world? You will never get better if you don't get up and do something about it."
She shook her head of the thought and climbed to her feet, ready to face the colourless world of Toronto. She shuffled into her oversized jacket and made her way downstairs. All she had to do was turn the handle. She took a deep breath to slow her thoughts. To Helena, it felt as if she was alone in this foreign world with nothing but the frozen white and herself for company. What was worse was that she did this to herself, there was no way she could deny it. If she only dared to open her eyes for a moment maybe she would find jagged little pieces of her life falling back into place.
