"AND THUS THE WORLD WILL BE NOTHING BUT ENDLESS BLUE..."THIS has been something I've been wanting to do for bloody ages.
BEHOLD, my homage to the first anime that introduced me to CEL animation - mixture of traditional [2D] animation with 3D - Blue Submarine No. 06!
It was also the first anime I've ever watched that was a microseries - it was only 4 episodes! 
I remember seeing this on Cartoon Network back in middle school - it was also during commercials that they had the "Giant Robots Week" ads going on that showed a purple mech battling a monster, something that caught my attention completely. I tunned in to see what the hell it was I saw and the anime was none other than.... you guessed it - NEON GENESIS EVANGELION
It was all because of Blue Submarine No. 06 that I discovered EVA.
Although the anime itself has some interesting themes to it, I wished some of the characters could've been flushed out more - one in particular being Mutio, the star of this particular work. :3
Although she says little to ANY dialogue in the whole series [other than hisses], I keep gravitating towards what's going on in her mind during the whole thing.
Her actions in the last episode *somewhat* make sense but leaves me wondering. 
I HOPE THEY MAKE A SEQUEL OR SOMETHING!
Anyways, I remember seeing a piece of art from the series [can't remember where in the world I saw it] and it's stuck to my mind, so I recreated what I remembered of it from referrences and memory.
I just wish I could've done something clever with her eyes, but I couldn't think of anything insanely cool to do it justice. 
ANY ANIME LOVER HAS TO CHECK OUT THIS SERIES, IF NOT JUST RENT IT OR SOMETHING!!!
Anyhow, here's to one of many homages I will and have yet to do for the things I love!

Fun. I like how you tried slightly graphical approaches to drawing attention to the facial features. I suppose one thing that might not be working is the simplistic color palette. =\ If there was just one different color (like a pale-neon green) to 'accent' the rims on her face, it might do something for it.
And... if anything Mutio's personality was the most fleshed out of all. XD; Something about being incapable of speech made all her actions a bit more... sincere?
Hum, personally, I think I dove into Blue 6 a bit retroactively. And, funnily, it came up in lecture earlier this semester during Character Design I ...but it was used as a "bad example." 
I actually had my brother's Evangelion DVDs since 2002, but waited a whole year until I was "ready" to launch into that.

Hmmm, the pale-neon green sounds like a great recommendation; didn't know what other colors to use at the time.
I tried using some other colors but after seeing the results I was getting, got frustrated and kept coming back to what I had.
Lack of speech really did help make Mutio sincere and all, but I wish there was some more interaction between her and Tetsu. 
I can see why - back in 1994, that kind of stuff blew my freakin' mind, but given how our media continues to evolve to this day; you either need to be insanely realistic or stylized. D: But then again, maybe I just have a eye for corny stuff. :b

Oh well. One of these days I'm going to hunt down my own copy of the Blue 6 CD-Rom game. The gameplay itself focuses entirely on submersible shoot-em-up (sounds kinda 'meh'; similar to how the 16-bit Ghost in the Shell game was just driving around in a tank). But the story added on to the original miniseries sounds fascinating. ^^ They bring in four new characters (including an Argentine- yeah, representin' my original home country XD) and an African-American child prodigy- kinda like Huang- only with a smug, suspicious cloud hanging over him (he's sorta like Kaworu to Huang's Rei).
Sounds like fun. ^^
