Description
You walk in with a tired sighWhile I place the barely warm food
On the table between us.
We sit, facing one another,
While you tell me all about
How you were out with the boys,
Throwing back a few drinks,
Or held over at work by the boss
Who just can't bear you to leave.
All the while I sit there
And listen to your sweet lies,
I can smell her perfume,
And see the black hair
(My own is blonde)
Clinging to the white shirt
That I, so carefully, so lovingly
Ironed the night before.
I sit across from you,
Looking at the tired smile,
The creased eyes that I once,
When we were younger,
Could lose myself in,
And I realize that now
The only one lost is you.
I let you fill my mind
With fanciful lies, and
Even more, I let you think
That I believe each and every one.
You stand up before me,
Stretching for dramatic effect,
I'm sure. Then you look down,
And for once I see the look,
The uncertainty that you
Would never dare to express,
The fear that you will never
Speak out loud. As you gaze at me,
You realize that I know.
This night, we will go to bed;
I will watch you crawl in beside me
And no words will be spoken aloud.
In the morning, when you leave for work,
I will clean, as any good wife,
And empty out the broken remains
Of our once oh-so-powerful love.
