Description
Species Name: FetchSpecies Nicknames: The Host, Spooks, Whispermen, Shadow dwellers, Spectres (darksiders only).
Alignment: Neutral
Designation: Sapient
Home world: Nocnista, located in Wild Space
Language: Firsa, Basic
Genders: Male and Female. (Note: If there is only one sex in a population, then they can change sex to make procreation possible).
Force Sensitive: Common. The race’s telepathy is always active, making managing in large groups difficult. It is not unusual for a Fetch to make use of a slightly altered Voice Scrambler (Star Wars: Galladinium’s Fantastic Technology, Guns and Gear for Any Occassion, pg. 63 copyright TSR 1995) that also emits frequencies meant to create psychic white noise to prevent ‘mental bombardment’ when they have to be in crowds.
Physiology: Fetch have heightened senses and three eyes without scelera, iris or pupil, which appear to be unnerving black voids. Their eyes provide low light vision but are also light sensitive. Most Fetch will wear dark glasses, headscarves and hoods in well-lit areas. Their mouths can stretch into a rictus from ear to ear, are filled with short pointed teeth and have a two-foot prehensile tongue. Their limbs are elongated and they possess dexterous fingers and toes that have small hairs called setae, which branch out into tiny spatulae, that are below the wavelength of visible light, on their tips. This allows them to climb most surfaces and gives them an impressive grip. Their capacity to contort their bodies, dislocate their limbs and redistribute their body mass only increases the discomfort other races experience if they observe the Fetch do any of the above. Earlier in their evolution, they were able to turn into a puddle and slip under doors, seep through cracks or fill containers. There are claims of some throwbacks being born among the Fetch who can still do this but none of them have come from reputable sources. Most neighboring planets and immediate neighboring systems comprise the largest market for Universal Energy Cages (Star Wars: Gundark’s Fantastic Technology Personal Gear, pg. 74, copyright 1997) because they are aware that a Fetch’s physical abilities make them natural escape artists and that they are Force Sensitive. A Universal Energy Cage is generally employed because they are designed to hold force users captive by preventing them from using the Force to escape the cage. A Neural Control Collar (Star Wars: Galladinium’s Fantastic Technology, Guns and Gear for Any Occasion, pg. 58, copyright TSR 1995) can also be used to prevent a Fetch from moving but the collar will not block use of the Force and most people do no want to be spied on by their prisoner via telepathy or deal with other Force effects being used to facilitate escape.
Average height: 1.5 meters to 1.8 meters
Skin color: pale grey skin
Hair color: ranges from white, silver and black.
Average lifespan: 102.5 years (this is based off the average of venerable ages of humanoid life forms in the Star Wars universe that I was able to find).
Distinctions: Fetch tend to be soft spoken and do not wear their emotions on their sleeves. Some might mistake the Fetch for being unfeeling because it is rare that their feelings show on their faces. However, they feel quite deeply; their emotions kept deep beneath the surface like the currents of deep bodies of water. Fetch tend to avoid flashy clothing, preferring to wear shades that do not draw attention and they avoid the use of perfumes or colognes. Despite giving the impression of being grotto dwellers, they are very clean beings.
Inter-breed ability: Rare with other humanoids, though difficult to determine how rare. There are accounts of the Fetch going to great lengths to get their hands on any half breeds and return them to Nocnista. Since their home world is closed to outsiders, the half breeds are never seen again by outsiders. The reason for this is that there is a high rate of half breeds going insane because they can not endure the strain of the constant mental bombardment their telepathic ability causes. The Fetch do not want a force sensitive half breed gone mad on the loose. Fetch do not speak of this to outsiders because insanity is a major stigma among their own.
Society and Culture: Once upon a time in a galaxy far far away an outsider asked a Fetch “how do the shadow dwellers arrange themselves? I want to find your leader so that I might speak with them.” The Fetch laughed and sipped her drink. She pointed to a spider web that stretched across the face of her chronometer. “Do you see the web? Each strand touching many others, all connected to the whole? Microfilament thin we are yet set one of us aquiver and we all know.”
But the outsider did not understand, and went seeking another who could help him find the leader of the Fetch. And each Fetch he found greeted him in all courtesy, and asked how he had fared with all the Fetch he had visited before, and named them all by name. Thus, did one outsider come to understand the way of the Fetch.
There is no great Keeper of Secrets, no aged Lore Master sitting in the heart of a cave somewhere. There are only individual Fetch, meeting in twos or threes to exchange secrets over drinks. Many Fetch laugh over the delusions maintained by other races that the shadow-dwellers have secret rituals in vast caverns beneath the surface of the worlds. Such noise and bright light would inevitably be more pain than the sociability would be worth. Still, many Fetch enjoy playing up these rumors simply for the fear they inspire in gullible races.
While highly private beings, Fetch are still attracted to the trappings of the formal. When Fetch meet Fetch, all of the proprieties must be observed to the letter, else the visiting Fetch is disgraced and likely to receive a great deal of company in the immediate future. As Fetch are by their own codes to be polite to those who are polite to them, an endless wave of well behaved company is pure anathema to them. Outsiders visiting the abode of a Fetch are advised to be as courteous as possible, else they will be transformed from tolerated guest to intruders, with disturbing consequences.
Any Fetch seeking company extends formal invitations to anyone whose company they desire. The invitee is bound by custom to attend and share the secrets they have learned since the last time they attended such a meeting. Those in attendance are not bound to tell all that they know, or even to say anything but to remain silent is considered rude. Stories are told in order of age with the oldest speaking first. Secrets are then told in sequence down to the most callow youngling who, no matter what, will be expected to contribute to the conversation.
Fetch tend to be monogamous. On the rare occasion that a fetch takes a mate, the match is usually life long. Still, it is so rare for a Fetch to find another with whom they feel comfortable dwelling that weddings among the race are rare…inter-racial marriages even more so. Most other races shy away from even touching a Fetch, much less becoming intimate with one.
Heretical Beliefs Accepted by the Fetch
History: Surprisingly enough, the Fetch began as a light sided race. While many of the tales about them have been born of fear, from the time the Fetch achieved consciousness of their purpose, they were dedicated to hunting down those who did wrong. They may have been a bit over enthusiastic in their pursuit of the wicked and dishonest, but their rigid respect for tradition and single-minded focus on punishing wrong doing made them accepted, if not welcome, among primarily light sided neighboring races. Long before first contact was made with races from the slice, the Fetch as a race had turned from the light side to a more studied neutrality. Accused of punishing and hunting indiscriminately, the misunderstood and feared Fetch severely limited their discourse with light sided aligned people. They essentially removed themselves from the province of light side aligned worlds, preferring solitude to unpleasant company. While technically still primarily light-sided, most Fetch consider themselves such simply because they find the dark siders’ disrespect for life and restraint disturbing. There is little of good or evil in the Fetchs’ choice to remain neutral; merely a desire to observe rather than be observed.
Darkside Fetch are an entirely different story. Darkside Fetch are the more fearsome members of the race. They prefer to strike from the shadows rather than watch from them, and give the Fetch much of the bad name the race has acquired among other races. As a whole, the race is near reclusive and the occasional member will make their presence known only on their own terms. When they do, they claim to be wanderers, who are not interested in getting involved in politics. The fact that their homeworld lies within Wild Space makes it near impossible to reach.
