Here we have a species of predatory mussel. They feed by using their elongated foot as a mouth with which to capture prey and swallow it towards their elastic stomach, which they prefer to keep buried in the sand. This couple of mermaids is showing the process of being eaten, one almost fully inside the stomach, the other being swallowed still to show the regular extent of the stomach. They will both be digested, the calcium phosphate in their bones becoming part of their shells. This is to make the mussels better suited to acidifying oceans.
