Hello SharpDressedReptile, you said you needed critique right? Well critique you shall get for asking so nicely. As a fan of your works, I've been wanting to go in depth with this pic for awhile and I already see that theres people already giving their feedback so I thought I'd give it a whirl myself. Initially when I see this pic, it reminds me of a character from "The Labrynth" or "The Dark Crystal" in a sense that this little inquisitive goblin character looks creepy on the outside but apparently is an inquisitive and yet friendly character.

Vision) As mentioned in the previous paragraph, I can see details not only emerging from your own creativity but some of your ideas were inspired by films like "The Dark Crystal", a very fantasy detail that only a few can actually nail down without messing it up, and Im giving you high points for that. Also, the darkness that dominates the whole pic and the wax candle on his head is a very nice touch, I could almost hear him growl out a "HALT! Who goesss there?"

Originality) I honestly think this little character has to be one of your most original creative characters you've constructed, between the lizard-like head and the cloak and the long tail, I'm really liking how this character looks, and I could almost sense he's only 3ft tall.

Technique) I could almost envision myself encountering this character in a dark swampy-like cave before another character catches his eye and he breaks eye contact with me, also I'm wondering if he's aware he has a wax candle on top of his head too? Very well done indeed amigo

Overall Impact) Five out of Five stars! Keep up the great work dude! I do wonder what kind of things will pop up next?

This came out very well, with just one or two little nitpicks I could make.

I love the motion and expressiveness of the character. I've always loved how alive you make your characters feel, and here it's no exception. You also did a great job incorporating two different colored light sources and giving the character the appropriate lighting.

I like the sketchyness of the line work, but some parts of it could use just a teensy bit of tidying up. His right hand gets a little lost, for example and I don't like how you can see his outline through the candle.

Overall, an excellent, atmospheric piece.

I'll take a crack at a critique e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>

Like all your work, the character design, anatomy, staging, gesture, and line is amazing in this piece.

You mentioned that you did this to practice lighting, and overall you are handling the two light sources fairly well. The subsurface light scattering in the ear is particularly well done. However there are some lost opportunities for using the cast light to model parts of the figure. The lower part of his cape, for example, which is partially draped over his tail, looks rather flat. Yes, its in shadow there, so it's right that its all darker, but the modelling could still carry through the darker values.

I see some careful work with diffuse cast shadows, but they don't seem to take into account that the cool light source would cast warm shadows, and the warm light source would cast cool shadows.

My final nit-pick on this very strong colored sketch would be the tail. The spacing of the spikes is a little too even. And finally, the contour of the tail is a little vague, maybe because you've envisioned a torque causing the spikes to lean over at the same time as the tail is bending to the left.

I love seeing you experiment and have fun with sketches like this, so please don't take my criticisms too harshly--they are very minor points!

Wow this character's concept and design is simply scintillating.

I do love the illuminating effects you put forth in your work. It captures an often overlooked dimension of aliveness to someone.
