“To ensure an enemy's defeat, you must first undermine his allies."

Sooo good Leandra... Since reading the first couple chapters, when I'm out, or not reading Aronansa, I have images and feelings in my head about it and a craving to read more. To me that's probably the most important mark of a good fiction/novel. I just love some of these lines and your chapters in general. Definitely inspiring for my own writing as well, at very least. <3

Ok, forget what I said about making my book character falling in love with Mercer and then getting heartbroken about him killing her *crumpls up piece of paper with that chapter and give to the cat to play with.*

Screw you Bethesda!! I'm gonna write MY Skyrim book any way that I wan't to. And end it any way that I want to. I think that the way that they do the Thieves guild quest line, Dark brotherhood quest line, Companions Quest line, and the way that you enter Skyrim is just unfair. And for that i'm going to add my own twists here and there. #How do you like that Bethesda!!

Oh, and great chapter and you can read what chapters that I have on my page of Skyrim. If you want to.

Oh joy, it's a cat-toy...!

Whahaha, the freedom of writing can be so liberating. It is a shame that I can't play the game like I want to... but I can atleast show them over there that they missed out on a great alternative and guess what... I'm not the only one who would like to see that alternative. I don't think Bethesda is releasing a Sharquelle-patch anytime soon, though... I so need to befriend some super-skilled MOD maker.   I did try to do it myself... and gloriously failed at it.

Thank you very much! I hope to get some new reading done after I finish my upcoming Holiday special.  Pooooooooooooor Mercer... he hates my Holiday Specials.

I love the twist you've put on this. It defiantly gets my thinking about Mercers side, but doesn't win me over. I've always been more of a fan or Karliah because I play as an elf, and I always say that the Skeleton Key was too powerful and had to be returned (such a goody two shoes, gosh XD). I'm such a hypocrite because I dislike Mercer and don't think highly of his stealing from the vaults, but the main character in my current fan fiction did the same thing. She stole from the vaults of her previous guild because she knew they were planning a mutiny against her and her leadership. I suppose that every one has an evil side, it's just that good characters are always aloud to justify their evil actions, whereas the bad characters aren't. I'm sure if the writers aloud most of the bad characters to tell their side of the story they wouldn't seem like such bad people after all.

Thank you!

I'm not gonna spoil too much and kill your fun reading but the Nightingale trinity will be restored and the key will return to Nocturnal. I played the game several times and everytime it bugged me that Karliah tried to destroy the Guild and then, all of a sudden, she returns as a member and everyone is happy again. I am an elf too but I was like... "hey, you tried to get me out of business as well!"

Hypocrites are fun, though.

I don't believe in good and evil as being that strongly defined. People can do awful things with the best intentions. People can do great things with the wrong intentions. People that commit terrible crimes can still have a gentle side and even though that doesn't make them any less responsible for their actions, it does show that they are still human. Same goes for motives, very few people do something without motives. We all have reasons for doing the things that we do, and again. That is no excuse to get away with resposibility, but it does make more sense. I like it when characters are multidimensional. It makes them come to life more.

I'm curious about your fanfiction! Gonna start reading that soon!

You know, I've never actually thought of that. I suppose everyone in the guild felt so shocked that Mercer had stolen from them they almost forgot about what Karliah had done. I know I did when I played through. I suppose if Karliah was really evil she could have taken the dragonborn and Brynjolf to the nightingale hall then kill them when they were cornered XD Maybe it was what was written in Galus's journal that convinced them.

Sharquelle In reply to JS-Church [2014-09-10 17:15:05 +0000 UTC]

Indeed, I don't think Karliah was really evil either. Just blinded by rage and so sucked up in her desire to take revenge that there was little she wouldn't do to 'even the score.' But I don't like the way that Bethesda left the player with just one option. I don't think they portrayed Mercer as a total heartless @$$hole... if Mercer didn't care about the Guild he would not have risked his life to stay Guildmaster (he mentioned he had to fight off a lot of competitors in the game) and he would have left the moment he realized that the Guild was no longer able to make him as wealthy as he hoped to be. He could have easily took his money and leave Skyrim, but he didn't. He chose to stay with a dying and stuggling Guild. If it was just money or status he wanted; he could have picked an easier path.

That and the fact that I am not ambitious enough to become Grand Poobah of everything made me come up with this alternative. If Bethesda came up to become a Nightingale and get the Guild back on its feet WITH Mercer staying Guildmaster I would have loved that. But since they didn't; my in-game Nansa is just running around with her grumpy 'carry-your-own-shit-because-I-certainly-won't-companion' whilst this Daedric Prince Sharquelle is weaving an alternative story to all of that and publishes the 'little bitch's' life story as a fanfiction.

I became Guildmaster once. I don't think I will be doing that again XD I spent such a long time doing side jobs in every hold ¬_¬ But at the end of the day, the dragonborn has other callings. By the time all of the story lines are completed the dragonborn is the leader of the companions, collage of winterhold, the guildmaster of the thieves guild, the leader of the dark brotherhood and a thane in every hold. They may also have a spouse and two kids. (I may have missed things) That is an awful lot of responsibility XD I think it would be a load off my dragonborns shoulders if Mercer was still around if he was willing to stick with a dying guild. The opportunity to get to know him would also be appreciated.

"Come, Karliah; it's time for you and Gallus to become reunited!"
Wah, my favourite line from him, in game!

I liked this one.
Its so good to finally get to know the other side's opinion.
I like Karliah and Brynjolf, but I didn't liked that Mercer had to turn against us in game...

Only one little difference can change a lot of things...

Sharquelle In reply to LothrilZul [2014-08-26 10:59:54 +0000 UTC]

Whahaha! Yeah, that's a good one indeed.

I'm glad!   I couldn't agree more with you... being totally un-biased. And I did not change a single fact when I wrote this down. Gallus died, by Mercer's hands but there is a 'subtle' difference in what happened according to him compared to Karliah's version of the story. Verly subtle...   I like Karliah as a character but I haven't forgotten her attempts to bring down the very Guild she later wants to join again. Willing to put the whole thing out of business all for a personal vendetta and then act like she's been there all the time. I was a little bit very disappointed with the original questline. Especially since I don't have the urge to become the Grand Poobah of everything. Mercer is a fine Guildmaster, just let Nansa do herr criminal thing and let him do his. That Guildmaster's armor looks better on Nansa's bedroom floor than on her anyway...

Indeed it can.

Yes, that things she were interesting, now that you mention it. Maybe I just symphatized with her because Mercer's scripted behaviour and because she's a fellow dunmer. I remembered that Casty let Mercer wait for her at Snow Veil Sanctum for ages, and I loaded her game. He didn't really wanted to let me in, even after telling me to lead. Casty had to pick the lock with her unmatched skills, provided by the '~' spell...

What is it with our girls getting poisoned and being out for two days? I swear I didn't read this before I wrote my own comic! (Though, I'm wondering if we had some sort of creative psychic connection since I did write the script for S2E3 in October... Hmm...)

Loved the chapter! Especially the version of events through Mercer's eyes. That was awesome!

I actually find this more than just semi-lore friendly. The dialogues being changed makes it more dramatic and better fitting for the story, while not altering the lore. Having Mercer be the good guy and Karliah be the bad guy is also done very well. It doesn't seem to alter the past at all. In both situations (the game and this story) Gallus ended up dead at the end of Mercer's blade in Snow Veil Sanctum, and in both situations Karliah and Gallus had a relationship. This shows what I think Mercer would've thought of the situation. And yeah I got addicted to this and I'm probably not stopping until I finish the latest chapter published so far

Hahaha, thank you so very much! It is great to 'meet' someone who has been studying the lore. And knowing that, what I did, does not cause you to chase me with torches and pitchforks for breaking immersion, is a great compliment to me. I'm very glad you like it!

I have been scrutinizing everything I could find on what happened between Mercer, Gallus and Karliah (Gallus's journal was also offering a lot of insight) and the thing that surprised me the most is; why didn't Bethesda came up with this?! The facts are so 'cloudy' that it is very easy to change the story without breaking the lore or the original game. They offered so many different options throughout the game; Empire vs Stormcloaks, Blades vs Paarthurnax but with this they only had one option...?!

I think Mercer is very well suited for this role, yes he is a PPOB/socially schizophrenic arrogant jerk/quarrelsome @$$hole but why should the 'good' guy be all that good? I rather keep him in character, instead of making him fluffy. That way, the few times that he does show he's human, leave more of an impact as well.

Ahhh well, getting me frustrated is causing me to get creative and I am having a lot of fun with this so thank you Bethesda; for the awesome game, the great characters and the lousy Thieves Guild questline   It's turning out to be quite an epic endevour, I have such a huge storyboard! But it is so much fun to create this and when people take the time to give me feedback and replies it makes it even better!

Thank you!   I will be making some extra adjustments before uploading though... I'm still not pleased with some of the parts that I wrote in those two chapters.  Especially when I compare them with the chapter(s) that I am currently working on. It's nice to see my own progress through time, but it is also frustrating when I see all the flaws I did not see back then... writing a new chapter, using the things I know now, is easier than correcting an older one...
