Description
Easy Line Width/Weight for Illustrator CS5Share on tumblr: [link] (:
As of right now I'm pretty sure this is a tool only for CS5, sorry if you do not have this version!
This is just a quick reference I made for people because I had a lot of trouble doing this the last few months until i found out there was a new tool @_@. Before this i would spend forever using a special triangle brush just fiddling with lines till they were how i wanted. Now there's no need to do it anymore omg SO EASY D:
Extra things you can do:
• Delete a width point: Just click on one and hit "delete"
• Select multiple points: Shift + Click each point
Official support page: [link]
This journal from =firstfear has a little animation showing what it would look like while adjusting line widths and more exameples:
Tapered Stroke (Illustrator)I just feel like sharing my joy at figuring this out haha xD
For the longest time I've not bothered with tapering my strokes in Illustrator b/c i couldn't figure out how to do it effectively. I knew one could achieve it by creating a tapered brush and applying that to the stroke, but I could just never get it to work right for me. It would seem that CS5 now has a built in function that allows you to alter the line thickness -anywhere there is a point along the path- by hitting shift+W and dragging :D
For those who do not have CS5, try this: [link]
If there are any other questions I will try to answer them but I am new to using this tool as well
You can also do something similar in Paint Tool Sai!

I unfortunately do not thing it works on cs4. You can do varied line widths by defining certain shapes as brushes or you can convert a line into a shape and manually adjust there. Sorry

i just tried my illustrator cs4 and actually found something similar to this
if i use the blob brush tool to create my desired line i can adjust the thickness of it later on

*muses over this.* Explain to my writer focused brain what magic this is? You must be using black-magic to manipulate lines like that!

You and your fancy terms are just trying to bedazzle me from the truth. Maybe if i take a few snips of your hair and mix it in a poultice I can gather the essence of your magical nature.

Hahahaha. I like sai's vector tool and it serves my purposes most of the time, but sometimes you really need the power of an adobe product @_@.. or if not need, really really appreciate XDD

okay, i am doing a portrait in illustrator for my illustrator class. Any easy tips or hints for doing skin?
i searched two pages of illustrator, vexel, and vector tutorials on da and there is nothing I really didn't want to use the mesh tool (i used it for the eyes and lips) and i didn't really want to do tons and tons of pen tracing and object blending...i finally just posterized an image in photoshop, opened and pasted it in my file, and then color picked and used the blob brush to color over the posterized 'layers' of color.
and my stupid illustrator book has about one or two paragraphs for the mesh tool, pen tool, and blending tool D:<

Wish I could help you, i actually do not use illustrator very much and when i do it's strictly graphical or simplistic designs (like my ponies). I encourage you to look outside of DA though, there are probably video tutorials and stuff out there >_<. Good luck!

i tried youtube as well and a tutorial site for illustrator specifically.
i guess no one uses illustrator much to do realistic portraits... because It's NOT LOGICAL?!
which is why i dislike that our teacher is making us do it

I'm not sure when a portrait done in vector mesh is ever used, like does it get used commercially? I don't know. I think it's more applicable for things like.. cars? I DON'T KNOW LEMME JUST PAINT THE FACE D:

MMWoodcock In reply to Shattered-Earth [2012-02-18 01:12:59 +0000 UTC]
well i mean commercially for giant posters and stuff since the art would be scalable... but even still most people pictures are simplified or highly stylized
i think he just wants us to exercise all tools we've learned so far in the portrait... unfortunately, i'm going to kill illustrator before i get this stupid assignment done

Shattered-Earth In reply to MMWoodcock [2012-02-18 17:08:37 +0000 UTC]
Yea I'm like no one does photo realistic portraits you just take a really high res photo, loool. I think the mesh thing is the only way :/
Good luck, i wish i had formal education with illustrator but it's very touch and go for me =o=
