“_______, are you sure you can take on this task…?” Doflamingo questioned, looking you up and down carefully.

“Yes sir!” You nodded, standing up straight. Before you could add on to your response though, you cough harshly, keeling over forward slightly as you covered your mouth, ruining your posture.

Doflamingo narrowed his eyes behind his deep red shades, watching you with open curiosity. “I believe your condition tells me otherwise.” He inquired.

“Oh, no no! I’m fine really! Just a little cough is all! Something like that won’t slow me down. I’m only fending off a ship or two of rebels, right?” You insisted, standing upright again and brushing off your current condition like it was nothing.

“_______, you sure are one unbelievable person.” He sighed. “I can’t understand why someone with such motivation is working under someone like me.” He added, shrugging with a smug grin.

“Family.” You reminded him intelligently. “But I enjoy it regardless!” You added, almost choking on your lie.

“Right, right.” He nodded.” But I guess I can send you on your way then. As long as you agree to the company of another to watch over you just in case something does happen.”

“Oh, of course! I have no objections.” You agreed. “Who will you be sending with me?” You asked, curious of your partner on this adventure.

“Someone I think you’ll quite enjoy the company of.” He smirked. “Corazon, I’ve got a job for you!” He called with a slight hum in his tone.

On command, Corazon came into the current room you and Doflamingo stood in, coming and standing beside Doflamingo, note pad at the ready.

    “What’s up?” He wrote.

“_______ has a mission, but she appears to be a little… sick. She insists she’s fine though, so why crush her determination? I’d like you to accompany her to ensure her safety.” Doflamingo explained with a nod.

Corazon looked from his brother to you, viewing the situation you had called fine. Though you were just coughing, your confidence in yourself beamed past it no problem. He gave you a warm smile when your gaze met his, ensuring he was happy to carry out this task.

“You got it. I’ll watch out for her. He wrote to Doflamingo.

“Good! It’s been settled then. Corazon will be accompanying you on your trip _______. You ma6y leave as soon as you can.” Doflamingo clapped, turning towards the door. “Have fun you two~!” He added, pressing the door open and exiting, leaving you with Corazon.

Oh have fun you shall indeed. Working with Corazon is probably the best thing to happen to you all day. Kind hearted, caring, hardworking, attractive Corazon.

You felt a light tap on your shoulder, pulling you from your slight dreamlike state. You caught Corazon’s finger just leaving your shoulder as he proceeded to hold a note up for you to see.

“You’re staring off into space _______.” It read, his expression showing a slight smile, as if he was chuckling at you.

“O-oh, sorry!” You mumbled, your face beginning to turn red from blushing.

He began to look slightly concerned then, leaning in and pressing a hand to your forehead briefly. “Are you sure you’re okay? Your face is pretty warm.” He wrote quickly.

“Of course! N-nothing is wrong!” You assured, backing up a bit and trying to tone down the blush on your face. “L-let’s head out. I’ve already prepared a ship a few hours ago.” You prompted, turning to the door and beginning a fast paced walk out.

Corazon watched you begin to leave, slightly puzzled at your actions. Then, he began to smile as a faint chuckle escaped his lips, understanding the situation. Still worried for your current health situation though, he followed in step behind you, heading out to the docks where the prepared ship waited for you.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

“So what’s this mission my brother is sending you on? Sounds important.” He wrote, leaning on the railing next to you.

“He’s picked up on an alleged ambush coming to try and kill the innocents of this island and then Doflamingo himself. I highly doubt anyone could harm him in the slightest, but the innocents of this place are another story.” You explained, “I think it’s a test, personally.”

“A pretty tough one at that if it’s so. But if you pass… you could get promoted to a higher rank.” He wrote with a smile, the ink from his modern designed quill flowing out smoothly.

“Yeah, I guess I could.” You smiled. “But now, I guess I’ll focus on locating the ambush ship. Anything in between those two small mountains are considered enemies, so if you spot something, let me know.” You added, directing your gaze out to the specified stretch of sea.

He nodded in response and looked out as well, prepped to launch attack if needed. His attention was torn though, as he heard you begin to cough again, and it sounded raspy as hell too, bringing concern back to his face.

“Hey, are you sure you’ll be okay? You sound a little rough.” He wrote, the tip of his quill twitching slightly.

“Oh, yeah, I’m fine. Just a cough!” You said with a reassuring smile. “Nothing I can’t handle. Now, to find those ambushers…” You mused, beginning to pace around the ship.

Corazon sighed, lowering his pad and quill in defeat. You were confident in your condition, and nothing would change that. It worried him greatly though. If you were to fall ill mid-battle and- no. He refused the though. Even so, he would watch out for you. There was something he wanted to tell you eventually, and before you died, would be a glorious place to start.

Now fully in search mode, you and Corazon scanned the sea as you let the ship slowly drift into the waters that calmly rippled between the two targeted mountains. If the information you were given was correct, these rogues should be somewhere in here, right at this time. To your surprise though, there wasn’t a ship in sight, going by the head on vision from your position to the end of the rocky stretch.

“Huh… that’s weird… I don’t see anyone, or anything but rocks for the matter.” You mumbled curiously, tapping a foot in slight annoyance.

Corazon looked equally as puzzled, a finger to his chin as he looked the area over in a whole three sixty-five degrees. As the ship moved, some jutting sections of the mountains passed by, revealing small caves in their sides. Then, there was a sunned muffled sound, followed by a whiz of air going by his head, shocking him and catching his attention.  He knew what it was immediately and quickly whipped around, taking his foot and smashing it down on the deck hard, the thump catching your attention. He had spotted the ambushers hiding in a cave that was hidden on the opposite side of the area you were sailing in. You had turned around at the sound, looking from him to where he was pointing, just narrowly avoiding a bullet that came whizzing by your head.

“Shit! Thanks Cora!” You called, leaping over a crate and unsheathing the large sword you kept at your waist. “Let’s get ‘em.” You added darkly, taking the helm of the ship and spinning the wheel over towards the opposing ship, gripping your sword tightly.

Upon your ship’s change of course, the DonQuixote flag flaring up in their direction, panic could be felt in the air from their direction, as well as a great threatening aura. There was an immediate assault of flying bullets and canon fire in an attempt to slow or cease the advancement of your ship. That though was something that didn’t work out in their favour as you deflected the bullets with your sword and returned fire by busting open the crate from before, smaller swords spilling out from it so you could throw them all at the ship, nailing them with your far more accurate aim as your ship crept closer and closer to theirs.

It didn’t take much more time before the side of your ship smashed into theirs, regardless of the gun assault. Their numbers were far greater that two, clearly giving you and Corazon a numerical disadvantage. That’s what they believed though, and it drove these rogues forward, leaping onto your ship without hesitation.

“They’re underestimating us.” You huffed, “How cute. I feel betrayed. Doflamingo sending me on such a pathetic mission.”

“Don’t get cocky _______.” Corazon wrote, flashing the note at you. “Just take ‘em down and watch your sickness. He scribbled on the side quickly.

“You worry too much.” You scoffed. “Have some faith.”

Chuckling slightly, you sent yourself forward, brandishing your sword and easily slicing the on comers with too much confidence. Egotistical bastards. This was too easy. Slash here, blood flies there, there was seemingly no problem at all whatsoever. Well, at least it seemed that way at first. The idiots rushed in, but the smart and skilled ones stayed back. These ones had good sword skills, and took you on three to one, making you stagger and force yourself to assume a defensive position. This was bad, as a few snipers came from behind them and aimed at you, having a clear shot while you couldn’t deflect anything.

“Shit!” You cursed, looking up. “CORA! SOME BACKUP WOULD BE NICE PLEASE.” You yelled, blocking blades with your own frantically.

Corazon turned an eye to you from the group he was fighting off at your call. He inwardly cursed and gave a violent kick, sending his group over the edge and into the sea as he kicked off the deck and sent himself flying at the snipers that were taking aim at you. He took them out with remarkable speed just in time, and he then quickly turned and came at the group trying to slice you into a salad, tasking out the middle one as a distraction and leaving an opening for you to attack.

“Thanks.” You breathed, and rather heavily at that.” Your panting was rather harsh, and came out in a staggered pattern.

Corazon paused, and looked at you with concern before pulling out his quill again.

    “Are you sure you’re o”

“Cora I’m f-kgh! Fine!” You insisted, coughing mid-sentence as you cut off his writing.

Whipping around, you yelled a sort of battle cry as a few more skilled ambushers headed your way, your voice ripping through the air, along with their flesh as it met with your sword’s edge. These guys were really beginning to piss you off.

Cora stood back and watched this time. The numbers were down far enough for just one of you to finish the job, nut you were taking it far too seriously. Perhaps it was you trying to prove you weren’t in fact, sick, and your wild exertion was you fending it off like the enemy. This worried Corazon, as your screams grew louder and each time, a little raspier. Soon, the numbers dwindled down and you were left with a single burly man to fight last. Panting, your heavy breaths rasped out desperately in an unhealthy way that you didn’t notice.

Corazon stepped forward to interject, but you swiped a hand out to tell him to stay back, your determination radiating from you like the heat of the sun. With that, your battle commenced, rapid kicks and slashes being unleashed against your foe. He was putting up a good fight, but you were always the one to prevail in the end, and when an opening came, you screamed out with one hell of a throat ripping battle cry, slitting the throat of your enemy, cutting the jugular and extermination his existence. But, that battle cry was something that did your voice in, and when you screamed, the sound of your dying foe masked the falter in your own voice, rendering you blind of what happened until after the fact.

Panting heavily, you turned to Corazon and gave him a thumbs up. As you opened up your mouth to speak your usual smartassed comment though, you coughed, and as you tried to issue a verbal formation of a sentence, it all came out in the form of wheezes and a slight high pitched squeal, instead of your voice.  Covering your mouth in shock, you tried to speak again, but the results were only the same. Looking up at Corazon with shock, he looked like he was about to bust out laughing at your misfortune.

“Well, I did ask if you were sure you were okay.” He wrote, quill shaking as he seemed to be holding in laughter.

You gave him a death stare and flipped him off, holding down a cough as you plotted which rude sign language gestures you were going to have to use next.

“Here. Take my notepad. You’ll need it for communication.” He wrote quickly, turning his pen around and offering them to you.

Instantly, you shook your head no and began to make frantic gestures that meant you didn’t need it, and that he certainly needed it more than you.

“I don’t think I need it quite as much as you do right now _______.” Corazon said calmly with a smile.

    Wait… Said?!

You froze in place, staring deeply at the thought to be mute man, jaw hanging open.

“What? Did I render you speechless?” He asked with a bad joke.

You squeaked out a strange sound of shock and defiance as you practically ripped the notepad from his hands, scrawling ink onto the page like a madwoman.

“WHEN COULD YOU TALK?!” It read, you flashing the page at him frantically.

“Since ever. I just hide it around my brother. Now let’s get back to the ship and get you a remedy for your lost voice. I’m sure there’s something good there.” Corazon responded, turning on heel and heading back to the ship you came on with a slight smirk as he casually stepped over the two smushed together railings and back onto DonQuixote property.

You squeaked out in protest as he left, following after him as you flailed the notepad above your head, jumping the railing and catching up to him as he just opened the door to the infirmary, you catching it with your foot to let yourself in.

Once in, you found him already shuffling through a bunch of bottles for a special medicine to fix your talking problem. When he found one, he turned to you still standing at the door, holding a bottle in hand.

“Drink this and in five minutes you should be fine.” He instructed, tossing the bottle at you.

Catching it, you stared at him for a moment, stull dumbstruck by the fact that he could talk. Then, you slowly popped the bottle open, pouring a bit of its contents in your mouth before sealing it again, throwing it back at Cora and leaning back against the closed door, tapping the quill on the pad of paper with a slightly annoyed expression.

“Why the hell did you hide the fact that you could talk?” You wrote, throwing the paper at him to read.

“Because I don’t trust my family. I’m technically undercover, you know. Like you.” He responded.

“… When did you find out I wasn’t on his side?”  You questioned on paper, shooting him a glare.

“Since he bragged about the day he killed your family.” He replied simply. “So, you and I are technically on the same side.”

Sighing, you shook your head in a slightly annoyed manner. “So why are you even revealing that you can talk to me? Wouldn’t it be wiser to keep it a secret like you were?” You wrote. “I mean, I nearly had a heart attack HEARING you for the first time…”

“Well, first of all, since working with you, I began to trust you. And I don’t trust anyone in Dressrosa. And second, since I’ve been working with you so much, I thought it would be better to actually tell you I’m in love with you, rather than writing it.” He explained with a bright smile.

Your eyes widened once again, blush accompanying it this time. You tried to yell ‘what?!’ at him in shock, but a muffled choke came out instead, as it hadn’t quite been five minutes yet. He seemed to know what you were saying, and began to laugh as he walked towards you.

“Also, I figured you might want to know that I can actually use my mouth before I do this.” He added, leaning down into you against the door and gently kissing your reddened face.

Squeaking slightly, you stared wide eyed at Corazon, not expecting any of this to happen at all in the first place. His admittance to being in love with you, nearly sent your heart flying as butterflies formed in your stomach with excitement. This WAS something you had dreamed about, but found yourself unable to think of it as a reality, yet here it was, happening right now. It was time to embrace this dream that had become a reality. The notepad and quill slipped from your hands and dropped to the floor as you replaced your hands up around his neck slowly, finding new space for them to occupy as you let your eyes close, kissing back. He smirked at this, and took it as it was okay for him to place his hands at your waist, gently pulling you into him to deepen the moment.

Upon the decision to pull back, as air was generally something a person needed to survive, you felt a cool tingling in your throat. Must be the medicine. Perfect timing, of you could say so yourself.

“What kind of medicine did I give you? It tasted like ass.” Cora chuckled, feeling the lingering taste of your medicine on his lips.

“It was your idea, smartass.” You choked out in a slight whisper, as the medicine was only freshly just working.

“Oh, I can see that it worked just fine then.” He smiled. “Still tastes like shit.”

“Man up. I choked down half a bottle. Or are you saying that I’m not delicious?” You added, laughing lightly.

“Are you sure it’s me that’s the smartass now?” He asked, poking your nose gently.

“Yes. Because you’re also just an ass for hiding your voice.”

“Hey, it’s for the better. But, you’re an exception.” He hummed.

“Well then, I feel honoured. Thanks for sharing your voice with me.” You smiled brightly.

“How else was I supposed to tell you I loved you?”

“Just like this. By fixing my lost voice and giving me the sound of yours, you dork.” You giggled. “And for the record, I love you to, Rocinante.”

He seemed to purr at the sound of his real name being spoken, and quickly locked his lips with yours once again, giving less than a shit about the lingering medicine taste as the two of you began to communicate and express your hidden love without your voices, one being newly discovered, and the other, freshly healed.

There was no need at the moment anyway. It was just another one of your little secrets.

I'm liking this, a lot.  Rocinante is a total ass if you just take his mute identity at face value, but I've heard it said that only in silence can you hear the truth.
