Description
...and The Man, he stood thereWith a rage so deep and a fire in his pit
Flames burning through the sulfur in his eyes
He lifted the babe as he struggled to climb
The magnificent steps of the church
Ground down through the years of sinners passing
Worn, and with a heavy heart from all the pain its seen
He lifted the babe for all to see
With a glorious beam shining down
A light of a once forgotten Father to give help to the downtrodden two
He cried out through the howling wind and the uproar of the town
With a tortured rasp of breath he screamed out
SANCTUARY! SANCTUARY! SANCTUARY!
And all of the town grew silent, startled by this anguished cry.
The deacon, he knew that his kill had to wait
"By the time the light on this land is extinguished,
By the time darkness has reached the depths our town,
That is when the Lord almighty shall have his revenge
On the pitiless souls of those dark-hearted creatures."
And as he raised a crooked and gnarled finger to
The innocent man and his cowering babe,
He spat on the ground and swore and vowed
"When you leave this place for food or drink
I swear, by the name of the Lord above..."
The deacon grew silent for dramatic effect
And stomped on the head of a trivial rat.
His eyes glowed red like the fires of hell
Like the white hot rage of a blacksmith's steel,
But The Man held the child in his weary arms
And turned to go inside the walls of a beautiful sanctuary.
He did not know what tomorrow would bring
And drearily sat on a lonely pew.
When he looked up he saw the brilliant faces
Of a familiar mother with her son in her arms,
He picked up his child and walked slowly, in awe,
And stared up at the smiling statue of the beautiful mother,
Tears welled up as he remembered the story
Of a tale he once knew by heart.
As he clutched the babe deep within his chest
He fell to his knees and wept.
All that he's endured, all that he's been through
Fell to the floor to mingle with long-forgotten tears.
A warm sympathetic hand came to heal his heart
As the father came down with a hand on his back,
"There there, my child, you're in God's house now.
Whatever has happened He will surely forgive
As long as you ask and take Him into your heart."
"But that's just it," The Man replied, "I haven't a sin that that troubles me so."
"Then why are you weeping?" he politely asked,
But The Man just looked at him with weary eyes
With those that have seen injustice, sorrow, and scorn,
"My life has been wrought with nothing but pain
And I've wrongfully brought a child here to share it.
Please take my child and care for him here
Please do me this favor and nourish him
For my departure will be nigh."
The father looked on with great sympathy
As he held the babe in his warm, caring arms.
He never asked another question as he took his life into his hands.
Hours had passed since this beautiful meeting
Without so much as an exchanged whisper
And The Man got up and knew what to do.
He opened the doors of his sanctuary with nary a tear in his eye
As the father cried out "No! You mustn't!"
With an outstretched hand and a plea in his voice.
But The Man could no longer run and hide
His destiny awaited him at the hand of the deacon.
The Man stepped out onto the foot-beaten stairs
And onto the cobble-stoned street.
He basked in the bittersweet warmth of the sun
A last gift from his Father above,
Arms outstretched to feel His hug.
the deacon, with a sly, twisted grin
His teeth curved outside his lips
Laughed an uproarious, malevolent guffaw.
Hatred and malice spewed from his mouth
That should have penetrated The Man's flesh,
Tearing away at his skin like hooks,
But all The Man could do was smile as he stared above.
The deacon, frustrated that his malevolence took no effect
Turned to his men and pointed
His gnarled finger once again staring at The Man
He screamed at them with a force so great
And made his voice hoarse with just one word
FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIREEEEEEEEEEEEE!
And the shots rang out against The Man
Arrows penetrating only his flesh
The Man laughed his own hearty laugh
For he knew one secret the deacon could not comprehend.
As he fell to his knees with the deacon rushing forward
Unable to understand the glee in his face
He snarled at him and asked one question
"Why do you smile and laugh when you're dead?"
The Man finally looked into the eyes of his killer
And with his last breath he gently replied
"This life was filled with a horrible agony
And now that i'm dead I can finally live"
And with those last words his body went limp
With his soul to soar into the great wide expanse
Forever to be warmed by the benevolent light.
The deacon, who thought this as a victory
Would never understand the complexity of life
For it was not a victorious day
But a beautiful release of pain for this man
A man who lived a life of torture
For the simple sin of being
Who is now free to bask in the warmth
Of an eternal sunshine.
