Depends on the era.

I'd imagine before the Tokugawa shogunate it was very difficult -full of war and hardship for hundreds of years.  And of course you'd have to be meticulous about your appearance, and very devoted to your duties and your lord.  If you screwed up you might have been be ordered to kill yourself or shave your head and become a monk (depending on the severity of your mistake, your family members could be ordered to death as well).  

After that, not so bad for about 300 years -you could practice your calligraphy and poetry, and drink a lot.  Not much happened, but you'd paid just for being an "example" gentleman, and maybe for being a peacekeeper at times, rattling your sword to make people behave.

Then of course one more war, and if you survived, you'd probably end up a gangster or politician.

lol you might find "Hagakure" a good read.  You can find it for a very reasonable price.

It's kind of a nostalgic account of many stories and ways of conducting oneself from an old samurai living in peaceful times.
