Description
A few years ago, the Village Voice decided to use a SpongeBob theme for their year-end "Best of New York" issue. I got the opportunity to create the cover and eight full-page illustrations for the inside. This one was created for the article on "Best Art in NYC" Drawing and inking by me, color by Peter BennettRelated content

I can see what looks like the head of Billy from "The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy" on the "Comix" cover.
Other then that, this is a very nicely done image. I can seriously see this as an illustration and it truely shows. I'm sure children will love this image just as much as the fans who love the show. To me, I love the coloring and outlining. Nice work :3

Spongebob: Hey Squidward! Hey! Hey Squidward! Heyyyy Squiiddwaarrdddd!!
Sq.: WHAT?
SB.: Wanna go Jellyfishing with me? This is what I remember the most of that big ol pant-wearing sponge.
And my mom thought that they actually lived in a bikini bottom until I told her otherwise...

Personally I think you have missed their characters
Spongebob is meant to be the creative genius because of his free spirit while squidward's obsessive ego makes his ugly and bland
Alas, is only an opinion

Well it sorta depends on the episode, because in certain episodes, Spongebob IS a creative genius as you said, but in one episode in particular (the magic pencil one) he makes a very crudely drawn self portrait...I suppose it all depends on which episode the artist was thinking of when he or she drew this. As for Squidward, his painting above pretty much fits every painting of his ever shown in the show, self portraits and boring poses. XD
I guess it doesn't matter though, since it is only a cartoon after all XD

It was a GIANT pencil xD (I don't think he was particularly trying either)
Yeh, Squid's work is boring
Well... there are "just a cartoon" shows and then there are cartoons that are just brilliant works of art (you wouldn't call Studio Ghibli films "just cartoons"?)

Nami-Viveraldi In reply to Desinent-River [2011-10-23 16:46:52 +0000 UTC]
True, I imagine that was a lot harder to use. But I don't think he was trying in the episodes where he's an artistic genius, either, and that's what frustrates Squidward the most. XD
And yeah, there is a big difference to me between Spongebob and Studio Ghibli films. Spongebob is "just a cartoon" to me while Studio Ghibli movies are...well I don't really have a word for it. XD;; But they have much more emotion and I don't recall ever feeling like I'm going to cry after watching a Spongebob episode. XD

He might have just wanted to draw something ugly, he did call it a doodle xD
Spongebob never wanted to make you cry is it not doing what it intends? its like the ending of the star wars film where anakin was built into darth vader and he does that "NOOOOOoOooOOooo" thing, he was meant to be taken seriously but... my god O_o

Yeah, you got me there XD He does call it a doodle. Doodlebob, I believe, was it's name.
And I think Spongebob usually accomplishes what it wants, which is to make the audience laugh, but sometimes it creeps me out too...which I don't know if that's intended or not. XD And yeaaah....That "Nooooooo" thing is a bit silly....XD

Ah, it seems you watched Spongebob beyond series 3
That was when they changed the writers cause the originals thought they had taken him as far as he could go. Nickelodeon, in knowing the had a cash cow to milk, hired new ones who (to me) just didn't respect the show

Nami-Viveraldi In reply to Desinent-River [2011-10-23 18:16:52 +0000 UTC]
I've watched a LOT of Spongebob XD
I haven't watched a lot of the recent ones though. I didn't know they changed writers, so maybe that's why I don't like the most recent episodes as much. Then again, a lot of cartoons I watched when I was little have been changed. I guess it's because it's a new generation or something? Have to change it for the kids and such, or something. Personally I think they should have kept the same sort of humor they had before...

I honestly don't know... I don't see why they would change the writers to people who don't know what they are doing unless it was just money they were thinking about.
Animation still has the stigma of "it's just a cartoon" even when it comes to Pixar, it's so sad Toy Story is a much better film than the likes of james bond or other cheesy action films.
To be fair, the Pixar people are rolling in the money so they don't care if they didn't get a statue from a bunch of old, senile fogeys

I LOVED Toy Story, the most recent one made me cry. Though, for Pixar, I don't think they have any problem with writers. Animation does deserve a lot more credit than it gets. Then again, animation is a relatively new medium, and because of that it probably won't get the respect it deserves for awhile, since too many people push it into a category of "it's just for kids". It's like with video games, many people don't think it can be a form of art because of some gamers out there who are really ridiculous and are just a small part of a whole. But for animation and video games we've got Up, Toy Story (all three of them), Ico, Shadow of the Colossus...all things that deserve more respect and credit. Until people realize that animation isn't "just a cartoon" anymore, it's not going to get anywhere.
Sorry that this is sort of long and ranty. XD; I tried to keep it short but...

Eventually, the old fogies will be replaced by the generation who grew up on animated film and long after, games. Just sit tight and create your art until then for it will get it's recognition it deserves :3
is cool I do like this pic, just my opinion differs from the artist

Yeah, and hopefully those people who grew up with animation and video games will make those mediums even more amazing than they already are.
I never doubted that you liked the picture. XD I just wanted to throw my two cents in too. Thank you for listening!
