Description Update 24-12-2009
1. Due to the many irrelevant comments I'm disabling the comment feature for this work. Sorry folks.
2. Yes, this is the drawing that Shia LaBeouf has tattooed on his ribcage.

This drawing is about being a prisoner of your own actions and choices. It shows how I felt when I was going through a tough period in my life.

- graphite on Lana drawing paper
- photo reference (my own hand)
- about 12 hours
- 12" x 9"

Hope you like it.

I think my art teacher may have shown us this back when I was in high school. If not there I'm 80-90% sure I've seen this somewhere before. It's a great play on the eyes by the way.

Your teacher probably showed you "Drawing Hands" by M.C. Escher [link] ... the work this artist claims not to have been influenced by.

I love the symbolism, here, of being chained to one's own creations/medium. It blends seamlessly from the paper to the chain, and the clearly different specularity on the metal and flesh add depth and realism. Kudos!

I can appreciate you not wanting to be like Escher, and wanting to just make a statement, but you picked the almost exact same hand shape and angle and concept, you just changed the other hand for a ball and chain...not really that original, in my honest opinion. Technically amazing though! Great attention to detail. But you cannot help but understand why people think you are trying to copy Escher's style when this piece is so similar.

purgatorys-bay In reply to geoffb [2009-10-07 20:05:33 +0000 UTC]

The position of the hand is natural for drawing, so it is going to look the same. To say it is unoriginal is rather ignorant.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

geoffb In reply to purgatorys-bay [2009-10-08 05:54:19 +0000 UTC]

I wasn't saying that the rest of the hand is "unoriginal" but the hand itself is almost exactly the same as the one that Escher made famous...how is that ignorant...to me that's called being informed...the exact opposite of "ignorant!"

Hands are hands, they look similar doing similar things, that's all I am saying. Meh, to each his own I suppose.

its amazing! and wats really waky is that we are supposed to do something like that in school right now that has a 2d turning into 3d just like that!!!!! freakky i know...... anyway it really is amazing but i have a question how did you make the chains look even darker and have a metallic luster i know you used shadow but did you use anything else cause i think the chain around the hand is slightly dark then a normal pencil would do anyway it really is truely amazing i just love it!!:~@
