That's true. To me, it's more like a hobby, a fun past time, if i get a career that is related to art in some way, I'm happy!

Oh? Can you tell what caused them to leave? Just curious. LOL yes, that's a good decision, avoid the drama, and avoid negative people! Spend more time with people who can help you improve, those who respect and encourage you, and care for you! 

I don't think I'll be returning to school. Perhaps just short courses for specific skills I'd be able to use in a job I'm interested in. I'm working full time now, my work involves photo editing. And I don't mind telling you!

This is going to be long, I'm sorry but in 3 years I've seen some stuff So as far as I remember, few weeks after I created my dA account, I discovered a guy who drew cartoons about his life, art stuff and games. He drew funny stuff I liked but he also criticized the gaming and the art industry. I remember he made drawings and journal entries about the representation of women in video games. To be fair, I didn't follow closely his activity so I don't remember his exact arguments, all I remember is that he was labeled as a SJW and, of course, he got a storm of tweets/comments that apparently led him to depression. Last time I checked, he couldn't stand dA anymore and left... There's another Spanish artist who draws awesome pictures that strongly critics politics, catholic church etc... (I hate myself for losing track of his work). He said that dA censored some of his work so he left few years ago. I didn't check if the censure issue is true, but if it was I'd be so disappointed about dA too. He draws really well and it wasn't overly sexualized or vulgar as some drawings you can find on dA, such a shame... Aside that, I noticed that some artists who wanted to become professionals were simply less active on dA and kinda left for another platform because dA didn't boost enough their career. And finally, there were also some people complaining about some of dA changes and updates (logo, core membership and the journal about art theft were the most memorable to me) and said that they'd leave forever. I personally didn't check that, I'm just telling you what I read here and there

On the bright side, I also saw the rise of some artists (sarilain is an example) and I still see extremely talented artists active on dA (seriously, kawacy is a god). Not to mention that I was able to talk to artists online and offline 100% thanks to dA I guess I'm lucky because my art isn't controversial and nice people seem to like it I hope you'll also meet cool and supportive people too I saw your art btw, it's sweet and you progressed well since the last time I saw it. When I'll be less busy with my problems I'll browse more art and comment more on people's artworks.

I see know that you didn't like nursing school at all At least it's great that you have a full time job, it gives you stability and a peace of mind for your hobby

I see, I’m not surprised that they would eventually leave dA if they posts stuff like that. I get that people are allowed to share their opinions but they cant expect everyone to respect that. There will always be some people who will disagree and this will cause inevitable conflict. It’s the sad truth.

Art thieves are common too. So if one is a really skilled artist, their works are likely going to be stolen. I suppose that is a known risk the moment an artist posts their art online.

I think the best way to avoid most conflict online is to show positivity. Be kind to people and if you disagree with someone, agree to disagree! XD If you can’t say anything nice to someone, don’t say anything at all and move on to other things.

Your art is light and positive and fit for all ages in my opinion. It’s innocent and fun! Oh yeah, I watch kawacy, really good art! Oh wow, thanks for checking my gallery, it’s a mess though Doing best to improve!

True, we are all free to express our opinions and we shouldn't expect everyone to agree with us. With the internet we can't shout our ideas into a controversial debate and expect people to be nice. The guy who left couldn't stand harsh critics but he also insisted a lot to continue a debate with his ideas. It's important that people have different views and opinions and it's important to critic others views and opinion, both have to exist to have a sain society. But then again, it's easily said than done.
I actually feel really bad for the guy who left because he was censored (still not sure it was true I have no means to check that). As far as I remember, he seemed to respond to his critics, or at least he wasn't as affected about the other's critics as the other guy, despite his art expressed strong positions. I tried to find his account but silly me apparently didn't fav his artworks... or the artworks were really removed from dA I don't know. I hope he still continues his art somewhere else and doesn't get censored, people disagreeing with him isn't the real problem, he deserves to be heard
Art theft is so disgusting and sad! Each time I go to a convention I get super mad when I recognize an artist's drawing sold as a poster by some suspicious seller. It's not because it's a fanart posted online that one can print it and sell it off!!   I'm sure the poor (and this is almost literal) artists don't even get a dime for those posters and worse, people who buy them can't even find who did the artwork and discover all the other awesome fanarts and OC artworks that author did! At least I was glad to see at the conventions in France that some artists have their own stands so we can buy directly their art but there is still sooo much art theft issues and I still haven't seen any concrete and reliable solutions...

It's always a hassle to organize an art gallery but don't worry yours is nice Quick suggestion though, take the habit to sign your artworks! I remember that at the beginning I was like meh that artwork is so lame but I put some efforts into anyway. One day I found one of my comics on pinned on some table on pinterest. I had absolutely no way to know that someone, somewhere, did that and I have no way to know how many people saw it or what would anybody do about it. But when I saw my signature + the link to my account I was relieved. I might not be able to control someone who'd actually steal my art (pinning on pinterest isn't stealing) but at least I was happy that viewers could trace back to me if they got intrigued by it... so yeah add your signature

Censored? Not the same as being blocked from the site, right? I’ve never heard of censored submissions before but I’ve heard about people being suspended for posting NSFW stuff. I’m not sure if that is the same thing?

I don’t think deviantart is the place to express these strong ideas and opinions. I can understand a little why dA wouldn’t want those posted if only to avoid further conflict in the community.

Still, I believe that person should be heard but perhaps use other websites or social media for that purpose. There’s plenty of those I’m sure.

Oh wow, that is scary, for your art to be sold without your permission. I know someone on dA who made a fan art and she discovered that her art was printed on a tshirt online without her knowing! I just recently added watermarks on my artworks. I was confident they wouldn’t be stolen because I’m not famous anyway, but it can’t hurt to be more careful ^^ Thank u for the suggestion!

And good thing that person linked back your work to your dA! Phew! So far, no one has taken my art yet, none that I know of anyway. But I hope if anyone I know on dA notices this, they’ll let me know.

What I meant by censored is that admin would take off the artwork without the author's permission. I heard about people being suspended too but that's a bit different imo. If someone posts a NSFW without the appropriate filter of course it's not right and I'd even report it.   There are underaged users on dA, the author should be mindful about it. Now, if an artworkhas a correct filter, I think it shouldn't be taken down. I also love that this community is nicer than others, however I don't really think it's a reason to forbid some controversial ideas. Of course there are some concepts like pedophilia that are disgusting  and should be tracked down for ever. Other concepts, like BL for instance (not hardcore yaoi, really the sweet shonen ai/boys love stuff) was and still is controversial for many people around the globe and on dA. I think that the fact artists drew and shared BL drawings and stories for decades (dA is pretty old) contributed to its acceptance with time. And now, even if many deviants are still upset about BL arts and many many others simply don't care about it, it's hardly imaginable that a soft BL art submitted today would be censored by dA. Same goes for the furry stuff too, I'm really not a fan of that but you can hardly imagine a soft furry art being censored.
That tshirt fanart issue is so sad, I can only imagine how discussed the author was! I hope she could do something to at least stop whoever printed the tshirts online... I remember that Kawacy also had a problem with one of his OC characters last year... I feel so upset when I hear story like these, it's frustrating not to find efficient solutions to counter the problem! I saw your watermarks and you did well!    You never now where you artwork travels to on the net, so at least it can tell its viewers where it came from and who made it despite all the art thefts, usually watchers warn the artists when they see that their art is being stolen somewhere. That's the advantage of this community, a lot of members are artists too and hate art theft so they're ready to warn you if they see one!

I see, I understand now. That is awful, especially on the part of the artist who posted. I've  never known anyone here who has had that happen to them. It naturally would offend the artist when their work is censored. 

XD Yeah, I realize that deviantart has a lot of communities that like those controversial stuff you mentioned. That would be a tricky thing to handle for the admins. The latest controversial communities I've noticed are those with foot fetish O_O Not sure how to feel about that. 

The tshirt seller had it sold online, the language was in spanish, I believe one of the artists's friends who could read spanish reported the issue on the online website where the shirt was sold. I didn't get an update what happened after that.

That's right! I think that even if someone on dA don't know the artist but is able to tell that the artist wasnt informed that their art was used for profit without their permission, they would still report it ^^
There's also a thing about heavy referencing and tracing too O_O

Being an admin on any social network is such a hassle nowadays, I really wouldn't want to be in their shoes! I remember the foot fetish stuff too but I think I saw so many bizarre fetish that I didn't even try to understand it I wonder what will be the next thing ^^

The artist was really lucky that time! I really hope they solved the problem, it's always complicated to deal with theft when the thief is miles away from where you are! Each country has its own laws regarding copyrights so it's not easy to obtain justice... but as long as people from dA or elsewhere are careful, there's still some hope! So keep on signing your art, who knows it could be very handy in the future

On another topic, if you want to have long chats feel free to send me notes I don't mind talking it's just that it could be more practical if all the conversations were into a note if you don't mind

That's right, it sounds so complicated. And signs would have to be placed somewhere in the art where it can't easily be erased XD
It would usually take a professional to remove the watermark and not leaving any trace of what was removed there.
