Chasing Fairy TailsPart One
Crumbling Stone
A white cloud floated lazily over the sun, blocking it out for a few seconds as a young girl made the jump from one rock to another. She was crossing a slow-moving river rather quickly. “Come on!” she cried gleefully to her companion, standing at the bank, looking doubtfully at the water. “Gwen! We won’t make it on time if you don’t hurry up!” She cried over her shoulder as she landed on the opposite bank.
“I don’t know, Kara.” Gwen shouted over nervously. “Isn’t there another way I can cross?”
“No, Gwen! Don’t worry about it! Just walk across the stones!”
Gwen stared at the water again and then lifted up her skirt and slowly stepped on the first stone. She looked up and towards the other bank to see Kara smiling at her encouragingly. The water sloshed around the stone at Gwen’s feet. “What if I fall in?” Gwen called over to Kara.
“Then you’ll be wet, is all! Just don’t fall in!” responded Kara while gesturing to Gwen to hurry up. Gwen frowned slightly and then jumped to the next stone. She leapt three more stones and then smiled up at Kara when she saw she only had two left. “Hey! I’ve done it!”
“Almost. Now hurry up! You want to see it, don’t you?”
“Of course!” Gwen said, concentrating again on the next stone. She leapt, made a miscalculation and slipped, dropping into the water with a splash. Kara gasped and stepped forward. “Gwen! Are you alright?”
Gwen stayed seated in the water, her frown very prominent. “I almost made it,” she said, sounding discouraged.
“It’s just water.” Kara said, stepping on a rock and extending her hand. “It’ll dry, but my surprise won’t wait much longer.” Gwen accepted her hand and stood up, then waded out of the water.
“I suppose. Where are you taking me, anyways?”
“If I told you, it wouldn’t be a surprise.” Kara said while walking off the bank, and then looked behind her, smiling playfully. “And I’d have to kill you.”
“Amusing, Kara. Very amusing.”
“I thought so.” Kara said, running up to a path in the woods. “Now hurry up, or we’ll end up sleeping in the woods tonight just so I can show you tomorrow. Either way, you’re going to see it.” At the prospect of staying in the woods during the night, Gwen picked up her pace.
The woods were quiet and relaxing as they walked along the clean-cut path. Along the way, Gwen unintentionally caused them to stop. Whether it was picking flowers or chasing a butterfly, she always found a way. After walking for a good long while they reached some crumbling stone steps. “Well now it’s too late.” Said Kara sadly. “The sun’s going down. We’ll have to sleep here tonight.”
“What?” Gwen said, fear filling her voice. “Why? Why can’t we just go up?”
“It’s too late now. The sun is setting. You shouldn’t have stopped all those times.”
“I’m sorry.” Gwen sighed.
“I know, but now it’s too late. Help me make a place for us to sleep.” Kara said, heading a bit into the woods, away from the path. Gwen followed her reluctantly. Together, they both found some grasses that would make for a very comfortable bed, and then headed back towards the path in front of the steps. They arranged the grasses into two piles and sat down on them. “Are you sure we’ll be safe?” Gwen asked nervously.
“Yes, yes of course. I’ve slept here so many times I’ve lost count.” Kara said thoughtfully. Gwen still glanced around, doubtful as the sky darkened further. “Don’t worry Miss Gwyneth Carraway! We’re as safe as safe can be.” Said Kara, sensing her remaining fear.
“I just don’t like being in the woods when it’s dark out and all. I’ll be fine.”
Kara shrugged and then fell back onto her bed of grass. The stars were out and winking at her brightly. “Just sleep, Gwen. Then it’ll be morning and I can show you something just grand.” Kara said, yawning. “Just grand.” She repeated and then fell into a gentle slumber.
Gwen laid back and stared up at the stars, spotting Polaris immediately and smiling to herself. “Whatever you say, Kara.” She mumbled and then she herself, drifted off to sleep.

Gwen opened her eyes lazily and saw Kara standing at the foot of the stairs, gazing up them excitedly. Kara turned and grinned at her. “Gwen! Oh! I was just going to wake you!” she said, rushing over to her. “Let’s go! Right now!” Kara said, reaching down to Gwen offering to help her up. Gwen took her hand and allowed herself to be pulled to her feet. Kara dashed over to the steps and turned. “Now, Gwen.” Said Kara, trying suddenly to look very serious. “You can’t tell anyone about this. Not a soul, alright?”
“Not a soul.” Repeated Gwen, nodding.
“Cross your heart, hope to die?”
“Stick a needle in my eye.” Finished Gwen, crossing her heart with her finger. Kara nodded approvingly and then turned back towards the stairs, starting to climb. Gwen followed close behind, warily stepping on the crumbling steps. The steps were a rather large spiraling staircase. When they reached the top, they found themselves to be on a very level piece of land. “Where are we?” said Gwen, looking around her when she reached the top.
The sun was shining bright and glowing off the flowers as if they were covered in glitter. Before them stood a great stone door, seemingly made out of the same material as the stairs, that was built into the hedges surrounding it. Gwen turned to face a grinning Kara. “A fairytale.” She whispered and then walked towards the stone door.
Gwen came up behind Kara and stared at the door in awe. “How do we open it?” Gwen said, tilting her head to the side.
“Well, there’s a reason why I said we had to wait until morning—it’s solar powered.” Kara said, her smile broadening.
“Solar powered? It’s a door, Kara. How can a door be solar powered?”
Without answering her question, Kara went to the hedge on the left side of the door. She reached in and pulled out a lever-looking rod with a bright blue crystal on the end. She turned it to he right slightly so that the blue crystal ball would catch the sunlight. The crystal glowed brightly, as if it were drawing in the sunlight and capturing it in it’s prism; using it for power.
The door opened noisily, omitting a groan as it was swinging open on unseen hinges. Behind the door was what looked like a labyrinth of tall hedges. Kara stepped through the door and Gwen followed. “Don’t worry Miss Carraway.” Said Kara, picking up a British accent, “I know my way around.” Gwen, having no reason to doubt her companion, followed her unquestioningly.
********
Left turns, right turns, they seemed to walk for hours and hours. “We’re almost there.” Said Kara, breathlessly. Gwen just answered with a tired ‘Mhmm’ and kept her pace up close behind Kara. After what was fifteen more minutes of walking, though it felt like hours, they came to what looked like the center of the labyrinth. “See! I told you!” Kara exclaimed proudly.
“What is this place? Where are we?” Gwen said, twirling in a circle to get a good view of her surroundings.
“I already told you, Gwen!”
“A fairytale? Give me a break, Kara. Tell me where we really are.”
“What, don’t believe me? Fine. I’ll prove it to you.” Said Kara, smiling mischievously.
In the center of where the were was about a chest-high stone fountain, no longer sputtering water and covered in thick green vines. Kara walked over to it and kneeled before it. She ran her hand along the base of the fountain until she found a loose stone. She pulled it out, and then sat back on her heels, waiting.
After minutes of waiting a small blue light glowed from where the stone had been taken from. Soon after the blue light floated out from the space and landed on Kara’s face, tinting it blue. Kara giggled happily. “What is that?” Gwen said, stepping closer.
“Can’t you see? It’s a fairy!”
The little blue fairy twitched its wings playfully. “A fairy? They don’t exist, Kara.” Gwen said, staring in awe. The little blue fairy flew off of Kara’s nose and over in front of Gwen. “Does it look like they don’t exist?” Kara said, smiling and watching as the fairy flitted around.
The fairy kissed Gwen’s nose sweetly and fluttered before her; showing off her pretty black and blue striped wings. The fairy giggled as Gwen looked in disbelief. “No, they look very real, Kara, I must say.”
Kara grinned brightly. “See. A fairytale.” She whispered, and then laughed as a flood of fairies, every color of the imagination, came from the space where the stone had been and the little blue fairy had flew from.
Gwen joined in with Kara’s laughter and threw her arms up. “A fairytale!” she shouted, tilting her head back to the sky. Together, the girls twirled through the fairies, laughing with joy and amazement at the sight they were seeing.
They finally stopped twirling when the sun was just starting to set. They sat on the ground near the fountain, smiling as the fairies flew around them, tickling them with their wings. “Thanks for showing me this place, Kara.” Gwen sighed happily.
“Of course, Gwen! I mean, what are best friends for if that can’t show each other secret worlds?” Kara said, smiling playfully.
“Can we stay here tonight?”
“Yep!”
Gwen grinned and fell back onto the thick grass surrounding her. A fairy flew right above her, stopping to kiss her on the forehead before flying off to a place to sleep. Gwen stared up at the stars watching them twinkle down at her. After a while of staring up at the stars, she noticed she couldn’t spot the North Star. She sat up and saw Kara sleeping soundly. She stood up and spun in a circle, searching for Polaris, but it could not be found. She turned her eyes back down and found she couldn’t help but smile as she saw the colorful lights glowing softly in the grass all around them. The fairies were resting in the grass, which made them appear as dimmed nightlights, there to protect them as they slept.
Gwen sat back down on the grass and sighed. “Maybe I’m just really tired.” She mumbled to herself and fell back onto the grass. “I’ll feel better in the morning,” she yawned. Soon after, Gwen fell into a pleasant dream.
