Riding the Light
4/19/2020
Shooting cars/trucks/motorcycles in the middle of the day is often problematic at best. But when I am gifted with a nice cool cloudy day and a grove of shade trees it's time to break out the lights and do some shooting.
For some of you the following information might sound like gibberish. But for those whom are somewhat camera savvy he is how I achieved these shots. My target settings were F-8 @ 1/200 - 1/250th of a second. After a few test shots and still keep it slightly under exposed I needed to have my ISO at 400. I wanted it under exposed so I could light it myself in a way mother nature couldn't quite provide.
To do this I used a 12"X56" Glow EZ strip box turned horizontal on a boom. In some of the images you will see a long shadow at the bottom of the frame. I used a grid in these images to help reduce light spill.
I also had three hard lights, (see photo) one at the front and rear of the bike and one I hid behind the bike as an accent light. These I used at the lowest possible setting so as not to blow out the highlights and cause too much reflection on the chrome.
Lastly I added my smoke machine, because you just can't have a good motorcycle shoot with out smoke. Right? I also added a blue gel to the back light because well, it's cool. Remember, to get the desired effect from smoke you have to back light it. Trying to light it from the front will cause the light to reflect off the smoke.
These images are done with minimal post processing. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask!
Always,
