Acrosanti got me super into MTMTE. So I finally bit the bullet and made myself a Transformer OC (also you know need some Transformers practice). She's conjunx endura/some sort or romantic involvement with IamParaDROID 's Transformer-sona Drill-back. ButalsomightbedrawnwithRungcauseI'mtrash.Her alt-mode is a 1954 Volkswagen Beetle Sedan (Given that, yes she is probably a minibot).
More to come about this character if I can figure out how Transformers work.

Neat!
For me, physically (and digitally) building Transformers with Lego has helped a lot (for almost 20 years). Though, the biggest hurdle is always trying to figure out what goes where. I find getting/drawing some reference pics of the alt mode at different angles can be key to figuring it out. Sometimes you'll get the pic at just the right angle to know what piece(s) to use to replicate it are. Then, once you've got your transforming model built, you can draw a fancy interpretation of it.
Granted, that's just how I do it. I know a few folks who will take the aforementioned reference pics and cut the apart, then reassemble them into the robot shape.
Generally speaking, you can kind of eyeball what robot bits fold up where to make the alt-mode.
