Description                                         Staring

My grandfather had recently passed away from a heart attack.  I was really sad since we were really close.  We shared all the same interests; he was one of those “cool” grandpas.  He was actually a really active gamer; we played all kinds of games, old and new.  He preferred PC games.  But a few weeks before his death, he started acting a little strange.  Like he used to stare at the walls in his house and whisper “I can’t see it yet” or would just, well, stare.  I was always there when these weird things happened, but thought that these things came with his age.
Anyway, on the day of his funeral, his will read that he wanted me to keep his computer.  I was kind of honored for getting mentioned in a will, but I was excited too because his computer was super expensive and was one of the best PCs out there.  The will said other stuff like what he left for me on his computer and how much good memories we had with that computer.  The computer was actually there at the funeral, in a cardboard box.  So, after the funeral, my parents put the box into the trunk, and we drove home.  Once there, I brought the box to my room and started unpacking it.  The monitor was a little dusty but other than that, it was in perfect condition.  As I took out the tower, I put it down and looked at it, remembering all the good times grandpa and I had playing this thing.  I got a little teary eyed and decided to keep on hooking up the tower.  After about half an hour, I took a seat in front of the PC and started it up.
The desktop came up and it contained our favorite games, like the original Mario Bros. and Counter Strike (Yes, my grandpa liked Counter Strike.)  But on the desktop was something I don’t remember seeing before.  It was a game file called “Staring”.  It sounded like a horror game, but my grandpa never liked horror games, so why would he have one on his desktop?  Well, there was only way to find out if it was a horror game or not.  I clicked on it and waited for it to start up.  The loading screen was a white, blinking square; like in Battlefield 3 or Assassin’s Creed: Revelations.  After what seemed like a minute, the game started.  It was in a first-person viewpoint and the game started out in what seemed like a dark cave.  The graphics were 8-bit or 16-bit.  When I started walking, a low quality sound of steps came on, and it was extremely loud.  I turned down the volume on my headphones and continued playing.  I walked around the cave and realized that fog was covering up my vision in the game.  It was like playing Minecraft on the tiny render distance setting.  The cave didn’t have much to look at, so I didn’t really care.  I kept walking and nothing was happening.
After about 20 minutes of walking, I grew bored and decided to just delete the game.  Right when I was about to press the escape key, a static sound started coming out of my headphones.  It was really loud, even though I turned down my volume when I started the game.  I reached up to take off my headphones when the screen went black and the static stopped.  I left my headphones on and cautiously placed my left hand on my keyboard and my right hand on my mouse.  I waited for something to happen, I just waited.  After about 10 minutes, I got spawned back into the cave, but this time, there was a person standing in front of me.  It didn't scare me, but it sure did freak me the hell out.  The guy looked like a paper cut-out.  He had no expression and, he was wearing a black cloak and had a pale, white, face, with red eyes, no pupils, just red.  I could move again so I walked past the man and continued walking deeper into the cave.  I kept walking until I saw the man again.  Great, the cave was looping.  I turned around and another man popped out of nowhere with the same character model.  It made me jump a little.  So, now I have two paper men enjoying my company, awesome.  I was going to keep walking when my mom called me from downstairs.  She was asking me to go buy her some eggs and milk from the grocery store.  I agreed, thinking I needed a little bit of a break.  I minimized the game screen and went downstairs.  I got my wallet, got my bike from my garage, and rode down my street in the direction of the grocery store.  It was a nice day outside, not too hot, just a little bit of breeze.
That’s when I noticed something was wrong.  There were no cars on the road.  There were usually a few cars coming down the road at this time of day.  It was supposed to be rush hour, but there were no cars what so ever.  There were just people walking on the side…wait…they weren’t moving.  They were standing still, and staring right at me as I rode my bike.  I thought I was hallucinating, but they were staring right at me.  I stopped my bike and got off it.  I was standing in the middle of the street, looking at the people staring at me.  Now that I was looking closer, they had pale, white, skin, with red eyes.  Okay, I had no idea what was going on, and I didn’t like it.  I decided to just get to the store, buy the eggs and milk, and get myself home as fast as possible.  I got on my bike, and rode to the store, ignoring the staring people.  I got to the store and, guess what?  The lights were off.  It wasn’t closed, and the doors were open.  I really didn’t want to go inside, but something was pulling me in; not physically, but mentally.  I slowly walked inside and looked around, but there was no one there.
For a strange reason, I was calm; I was completely calm.  I walked around for a while, enjoying the darkness and silence.  Then I heard a whisper say, “Can you see me yet?”  I answered back, “No.”  Then I woke up.  I lifted my head off my keyboard and looked at my monitor.  The screen was on the desktop.  I decided to turn the PC off and do something else for a while.  I turned off my screen and stared at it.  My face was pale, white, and I had red eyes.  I just stared at my face.  I smiled, my hideous smile, and started to laugh.  “I can see it.”  I said laughing. “I can see it!” I heard my mom come up the stairs and I looked at her.  She screamed and tumbled backwards.  I started laughing so hard, I bit my lip and felt my cold blood trickle onto my chin and down my neck.  And then I just stared at my wall.  Disappointed, I said, “I can’t see it yet.” And just sat there, staring. Staring…
