While foolhardy, impetuous men might rush into action upon hearing the screams and curses drifting up from the corridor below, our heroines keep cool heads and spend some time planning their moves, even as an ice-cold voice makes itself heard above the commotion: "Tell me where your companions are, thief!"

"Oh my Goddess!" exclaims Agnes softly, witnessing the awful scene.

"What?!" cries Alice, quietly. "What's going on?!"

"Shut up," says Avaraele. "I'm lining up another spell."

"But what do *I* doooo?" wails Alice in a hoarse whisper.

"Maybe," suggests Avaraele, much too calmly, "you can go down there and politely ask the nice evil sorceress to kindly leave our friend alone and take you instead? Do you think you can do that?"

"I'd rather not," admits Alice. "After all, she's your friend."
