Actlually Arkham knew he would betray him (you know, for his evil plan) and vergil just wanted dante's aumulet and not to kill him (they can't die). He only wanted more power because He felt shame for not being able to save his mother from the demons. Lady just interfered during Vergil and Dante'second battle. Vergil wasn't trying to kill her, he was just saying that Lady belived in Arkham'lies before proceeding his battle with Dante. Plus, if he really was a villain he woudn't have helped Dante to defeat Arkham.
In the manga (if i remember) he killed those "innocent" people because they were mocking him. (I think)

I know, it's hard to say witch alignment Vergil has, it's like a mix between Anti-Hero and Anti-Villain.

He helped Dante because HE still wanting the power of Sparda, he know that Dante wouln't decline the help,  He probably would kill Lady if Dante didn't interfered(I already told you)Killing defenless people just for moking him is not lsomething "neutral", also, he killed and innocent librarian only because she asked him to serching in a bookstore  with prohibited books, the argument of that Vergil want power just because he cound't save his mother has a limits, he do all of what his parents won't wanted him to so with no remorse, I don't believe that Sparda or Eva would like to see his sons figthing for power. We only can guess that he want the power for that reason, but that its just a theory,

The lack of backstory just make it hard.

sorry, I don't think that Vergil was neutral at all, he was the VILLIAN, he is against the main character(who is a good guy), he do horrible things, he has no shame, remorse or honor, have bad intentions, and I can keep going, I know that you're a Vergil's fan(c'mon, look at your avatar) but trust me, he don't need to be a good guy(or neutral...) to like him, he was the best Villian in all DMCs, don't deny that.

Yeah, i'm a Vergil's fan. I like him more than Dante.

You know something? They should continue the original DMC! But, i guess they will never do that. (i watched Vergil's Downfall ending...)

The best thing would be continue with both story lines, but I don't even know if there is goint to be a DmC 2, We should give some points to DmC, It show us how Vergil's turns evil.

But if they continue with the original DMC I hope it will by more like DMC3, not DMC4, The plot and characters there were horrible...Even DmC has much better made story and chars than DMC4...

Yeah, in my opinion the plot of DMC4 was boring!

Well, I dont think DMC4 was that boring. The plot is interesting (aside from saving damsel in distress aka Kyrie, this part made DMC4 like a TV Drama ). I like hot blooded Nero. N I also like Dante the fun guy. They are interesting characters.
