Being a Beginner Week
If you're not familiar with the term, an OC ("original character") just means any character you or someone else makes up that's not part of someone else's existing brand/franchise. (If you make a character based in another story such as a TV show, it would be considered a "fan character"/"FC" instead-- although for many people the term "OC" loosely includes FCs as well.)
Do you want to start designing interesting, appealing, eye-catching, and distinctive original characters? Are you not sure where to begin? Well, buckle your seat belts! ...Because I’m the one driving this bus and it might get a little bumpy. I love designing (and redesigning!) original characters for me, for friends, or for sale:
I've come a long way since my first scribbles of Edgy™ but-also-kind-of-generic Star Wars fan characters , so here are a few tips I've picked up from making and admiring OC/FC designs over the years!
For now, I’m not going to go into writing character personality or story-- let’s focus on making the visual design for your OCs.
1. Start Sketchy
- Don’t work too hard right away-- start with plenty of brainstorming & rough sketches before pouring time and effort into a polished refsheet. If you stop with your first idea, you’ll never know what else might’ve popped up.
2. Tropes and Themes
- Your original character is going to have design elements that have been used before. And that’s okay! With all the artists in the world, it’s impossible to make a design that’s 100% never-been-seen-before.
- Being inspired by other creations is okay too-- but mix it up, don’t copy! Try not to pull all your inspiration from one source or base your OC too much on another character.
- Get specific! You can add a lot of definition and character to a design just by being more specific in your theme & species choices.
Examples:
Dog 🠞 greyhound, shiba inu, beagle
Princess 🠞 Victorian England, Joseon Dynasty Korea
Merman 🠞 humpback whale, flashlight fish, electric eel
- Don’t be afraid to mix and match themes! If you want to make a cotton-candy sheep-moth hybrid that’s also a vampire-- go for it! You might be surprised at how well unlikely combinations can work out.
3. Pick Your Palette
- Having a particular, cohesive set of colors will help define your character’s visual design.
Example: if you use any and every color, your palette can quickly feel cluttered or chaotic. {Thanks to C-H-A-L-K for the cute free-to-use lineart !}
- Stuck on what colors to use? Try browsing something like the DeviantArt Stock & Resources category, or (a personal favorite) ColorPalettes.net for ideas.
4. Simple is Your Friend
- You don’t need overwhelming detail to make a distinctive oc. In fact, sometimes less complex is more memorable! (Bonus: simpler designs are easier for comic artists, animators, and art trades.)

5. Avoid “Same Face Syndrome”
- For many artists it can be easy to accidentally draw the ‘same’ features and face shape every time. Change it up!
- The details of your oc don’t always have to be ‘rare and special’ to make an impression. Focus on giving your character their own unique face! That way, you'll never need to rely purely on details like mismatched eyes, scars, signature accessories, or unusual patterns to distinguish them.
Example: these characters, despite all having the same natural hair/eye colors, are distinguished by their very different facial features. - Play with different shapes and proportions when you’re making your oc’s face. It might help you to ‘go shopping’ for examples/inspiration of different features in Pinterest, Youtube compilations, makeup tutorials, or magazines.
Example: you can get wildly different results just by changing face length, eye spacing, eye shape, nose shape, mouth size, etc. {Mii Ⓒ Nintendo}
- Eyes are an especially important part of your design. As the “windows to the soul,” they can suggest a lot about your character’s personality. Eye shape/composition also dramatically affects the expressions your character will make!
Note: I have nothing against ‘dollmaker games,’ reusable linearts, or bases by the way. They’re a lot of fun and an easy way to play with design ideas--! But only reusing the same lines, proportions, or features for designs is limiting, and won’t give your oc their ‘own’ face. Don’t be afraid to break out of those limits for a new design!
6. Play with Proportions
- Just like with facial features, the build of your character’s body can be an important part of their design. Don’t be afraid to play with the size and shape of different body parts!

7. Posture & Expression
- Another often-forgotten but very important part of a character’s visual design is their body language and facial expressions. The typical generic ‘T-pose’ or ‘paper doll’ posture found on refsheets is ok for showing details, but is only a lifeless doll of a character. Nobody actually stands like that!
- Instead, think about how the OC physically interacts with their environment, and how they make expressions. A big part of appearance/presence has to do with how the character carries themselves. (Do they slouch? Stand ridiculously straight-shouldered? Do they tend to ‘hide’ behind things?)

8. Ignore Everything I Just Said
- Most of these are more guidelines than rules. I certainly don’t know everything there is to know about design, either, so I probably missed a few things!
- Ultimately, your oc is your Original Character! If it makes you happy to draw a “boring” or “dumb” design, DO IT!
The only one who has to like your creation is you, and sometimes the silliest designs are the most fun to make.~
